Dog transport

Those of you who read my pass. side door post, read that I was transporting dogs from Ohio.
Just an update if interested
All 5 dogs came back with us tonight
2 went to a new home in Canada
1 will be going to a new home tomorrow morning
1 will be going to a foster home in NY
1 will be staying with us until she gets a new home.
If anyone wants pics let me know.

Great to hear this Jerry and we are very glad that those dogs get a second chance in life. You and your wife are hero's in these dog's lives.

So you help find dogs homes?
I used to be involved in that in 2003....myself and the ex-wife were with a local (in)humane shelter and we transported several dogs around n. missouri.
Ended up being heartbreaking when some were euthanized, I had to get away from it...

It's for the dachshund and german shepherd rescue.
We pull them out of shelters, foster them and find the right home for the dog based on there personalities.

Thats why a lot end up in shelters. most people don't know they're supposed to be in charge of the animal. Not the other way around.

We try to get to them before they get put down.
My Shepherd came from a high kill shelter in Ohio. They would have put her down if she wasn't taken out of there quickly, because she was very afraid of people.
Now she's a big mush.

FordTruckFreek - I, too, worked at an (in) humane shelter, and to be more exact it was a 'Humane Society'
I worked for the dogs and loved it, but the way the policy changed to allow euthanization bothered me and prefectly good/adoptable dogs were being put to rest.

I finally got the pics on photo-bucket.
these are half of the dogs that we picked up from cleveland.
the other half went to canada that same night.

and here's a new one that came through here last week an now has a new permanent home.
He was really sad when he came here, but now he's happy and playing

my hats off to ya. I couldn't do it, I'd be an emotional wreck. I'm a dog lover, and fail to see how cruelty can happen.....but it does.

Jerry & Sheila, Just goes to show these dogs have alot of friends in higher places and are very happy to get the opportunity for a second chance in life where they will be loved. :D

That is a great thing you are doing.

My wife and I have no children. Our dogs are our kids. This winter we learned of a little Pekingese who'd led a horrible life in an abusive situation at a puppy mill. We had to jump through some hoops to get her, as the rescue that had her didn't want to ship her to an unknown family. Finally, we convinced them. She arrived just a few days before Christmas. She had missing teeth, a broken tail, heartworm, tapeworm and severe skin problems. She's about seven and had spent her whole life in a 2x2 wire cage.

Well, she thinks she died and went to heaven now! She is the sweetest little girl. We love her and she loves us. If anyone out there is ever looking for a dog, consider rescuing one. It's a noble thing to do, and the dogs are the most grateful little soles.

this just in
My wife said most shelters are kill shelters in Ohio.
I guess most are in southern Ohio.
They test there temper by harassing them to see what they do.
Most are afraid to start with so they cower or growl back which means to them that they aren't suitable to be pets.
most working dogs and sporting dogs don't react well in shelters.
German shepherd and dachshunds are among the worst and don't do well in that situation,
they either cower and act scared or get aggressive. but most will get aggressive if scared. you would to if someone was poking you with a stick in a cage.
There are 100s of people on waiting lists for dogs.
A lot of the problem is getting them from state to state to there new home.

She's in touch with most breed rescues. including cat. I think she even knows a bird rescue.

She had no name when she was brought to the shelter in Ohio.
The guy left no info other than her age. dropped her off and left.
She was 45 lbs when we got her and the foster home put 10 lbs on her since they got her.
She now weighs 65 and is a little skinny looking at times.
she was afraid of people and would go hide in a corner, and if you moved fast she would drop to the floor as if you were going to beat her.
we adopted her for $250 from brightstar rescue. and new that she had a problem with her knee.
come to find out in xrays that her leg had been broken and a pin put through the entire length of her leg but her knee was messed up possibly broke at one time also and not set properly.
So we had knee surgery done 5 months after getting her. She went from limping all the time to never limping after the surgery. also come to find out that she has a lot of energy now. and is currently being trained to be a therapy dog. She will be getting her Good Canine Cert. after graduation next Fri.
next she will be doing agility training for her cert.
