Retro sells, Chuck. Last I saw you were driving cars at least twenty years old. The buying public hasn't rewarded the Domestics for coming up with new and original designs in a very long time (Aztec anyone?), so when they go retro the things fly off the lot (I can't say that for the SS-R, though). Maybe the reason people love retro so much is because they show styling that is instantly recognizable as coming from 'such and such', as opposed to the generic featureless look of everything modern.

The challenger looks like a Dodge. The Neon looked like a Neon. The New Beetle looks like a Volkswagen. The Passat looks like the Five Hundred......... I mean Passat. The T-bird looked like a T-bird when it was an MN-12, but when the retro bird came out, it looked like a Ford.

For every Retro car on the street, there are fifteen other boring modern cars ripping around, and we all know what car people are staring at. That's you too, Chuck, unless you consider the Camry eye catching.

I don't buy canned retro....I drive REAL retro.....

The question is..where do you go from a retro design?  To another one?  So what, is the EcoBoosted 2011 Mustang going to be a '76 Mustang inspired piece?

That is the real problem with retro. Just ask VW. ;) Their big update to the Beetle was a less smiley bumper and some revised head/tail lights. I've seen some sketches of what was expected of the next Mustang, and it looks like ass. They tried to modernize the already modernized retro, and it looks like it has an identity complex.

But retro works, so long as you don't try to update it. But then you're stuck with a design. That's why these retro cars should be short runs. When it gets to long in tooth, reinvent. Like the Retro T-bird, I don't think anyone wants to see an update of that thing, but it's cool as its own series. 'The' Retro T-bird, not 'a'. The Thunderbird should come back as a long coupe with an arse, and we can remember the retros as a collector look back at the glory days.

Right, modern retro is a fad that I wish would go away.  They "design" themselves (or copy themselves) into a hole that they can't get out of.

How "unique" is a modern retro when there are thousands of them running around?  Not very.  Still just as "cookie-cutter" as everything else when it comes down to it, they just used an older mold and mashed it a bit.

I found this sort of interesting.
A friend of mine who is a lifelong Mopar guy and owns 11 Mopars and one Ford.

’07 Shelby GT500
’06 Charger R/T
’05 Ram Quad Cab 4X4
’03 Jeep Grand Cherokee
’01 Intrepid R/T
’93 Dodge Daytona IROC R/T
’71 Plymouth Sport Fury GT 440 6-pack
’71 Dodge Charger R/T 440
’71 Dodge Challenger R/T 340
’70 Dodge Challenger R/T 440 6-Pack
’70 Plymouth ‘Cuda convertible 340
’69 Dodge Polara 500

He originally planned on getting a Challenger SRT, but he said after seeing the production version and then seeing a GT500KR in person on the same day at the Chicago Auto Show, he said he just doesn’t like the Challenger as well as he thought he would.
He said the Challenger is just big and “heavy looking”, especially in the front & rear bumper areas of the car. But the stance and the “meanness” of the GT500KR is just right, and has decided to sell his '07 GT500 to get a KR.

I have to agree with him, but it surprises me a little coming from a lifelong Mopar guy that he still is choosing the KR over the Challenger.

This is exactly how I feel. The side profile of the car looks just fine to me, but the front end just looks so stupid. It reminds me of a bulldog, to be honest. The grille and headlights are just too  high, if that makes any sense.
They got the design right the first time.

Red Barchetta

All this talk about heavy safety laden cars (& highways filled with massive SUV's) contrasted with the retro muscle car phenomenon reminds me of the song "Red Barchetta" by Rush.

Quote
The song was inspired by the futuristic short story "A Nice Morning Drive", written by Richard Foster and published in the November, 1973 issue of the magazine Road and Track. The story describes a similar future in which increasingly-stringent safety regulations have forced cars to evolve into massive "Modern Safety Vehicles" (MSVs), capable of withstanding a 50-mile-per-hour impact without injury to the driver. Consequently, drivers of MSVs have become less safety-conscious and more aggressive, and "bouncing" (intentionally ramming) the older, smaller cars is a common sport among some.

"Red Barchetta"

My uncle has a country place
That no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm
Before the Motor Law
And on Sundays I elude the eyes
And hop the Turbine Freight
To far outside the Wire
Where my white-haired uncle waits

Jump to the ground
As the Turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me an old machine
For fifty odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream

I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car
A brilliant red Barchetta
From a better vanished time
I fire up the willing engine
Responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel
I commit my weekly crime

Wind
In my hair
Shifting and drifting
Mechanical music
Adrenaline surge...

Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware

Suddenly ahead of me
Across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air car
Shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires
To run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley
As another joins the chase

Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud with fear and hope
I've got a desperate plan
At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded at the riverside
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle at the fireside

Makes you think...

I cranked it up on my big electrostats after reading this post :D

Funny, The Daily Show was making a joke about "Rush" and they showed a video clip of Geddy Lee singing Tom Sawyer :hick: "not that Rush" said John Stuart, "my producer loves Rush, he's got pictures of them all over his office" :headbang: :canada:

So..who owns what's left of AMC? Now it's their turn to puke out another retro-inspired "Javelin" because no one can come up with a new idea to save their asses these days.

Ah...your wish is our command: :)

Kinda tough times to be a designer or manufacturer. Nobody wants futuristic, everybody thinks current is boring, and retro has just about jumped the shark.

I actually somewhat like the Challenger, though it's a pity Plymouth died because a retro Cuda would have been way cooler. The Challenger isn't perfect, of course, but with modern crash standards it's kinda hard to be perfect. Likewise, with modern expectations of content and structural rigidity it's hard to be lightweight.
