go with the chuck mounts. Do it once right and be done with it. I'll be putting his mounts to the test really soon :)

I'm almost tempted to just use the mounts I have because they've been perfect so far.  But I don't know.  I really don't have the money to spend that much on motor mounts.

Oh you have a good set of mounts? Just use them. The mounts aren't hard to change when they go bad. When you have good used parts just go with it, you can't replace everything with new.

or you could just drop alittle bit more and do it right. Mine were like $60 each for just the rubber. $120 every couple of years, or $200 never again.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

heck, re-use them. if they cause you trouble down the road its easy enough to change them out. spend the money then if need be, not now. thats one of those things.

if there not broke, I would use them.

For those wanting solids for the strength, sacrificing the smoothness given by rubber mount's, There is a very good solution I used to use years ago. Posi, M50-15's, top loader 4speed and a comp clutch used to EAT a pair of standard ford mount's by lunch time...

Take an Eye & Eye Turnbuckle like this
http://www.mutualscrew.com/products.php?pid=3917
and add in a couple links of chain to each end, one of these chains you bolt to the frame rail, the other to somewhere near the front of the head (On my Torino there was an exposed, unused accessory bolt hole on the front of the head)
Bolt it up then just "Snug" the turnbuckle down finger tight.

A motor only torques one way. forward, reverse is all handled in the tranny, the motor still lift's only on one side and pushes down on the other. (Drivers side lift's I believe) this Torque is what breaks the mount. This turnbuckle will limit the allowable travel the motor can do to less than what can tear the mount. Idling, cruising, daily driving the motor is as smooth as you can get with soft mounts, Under load the Torque brings it up against the turnbuckle and is as strong as any solid mount you can make or buy. I first did this when I had broken my third motor mount and needed a quick fix. Worked so well I put off replacing the mount for about a year, drag racing the car every weekend with a broken (torn) mount. When I went in to change a starter I did the mount's, and replaced the turnbuckle, never broke another mount.

you can do the whole deal for about $10.

The thing about stock mounts is I didn't know they were broke till I replaced them with cw's. The saftey tab holds them from lifting to much, so I never did know it.

mine are broke (pass. side) and need replacing...  found that out when I did the Longtubes....  now if I take a right hand corner too hard it tries to bind up my steering on the headers...  Not much room there...  so I gotta get those next....

I looked into it, I only bought one new one, and it was $69... But it was torn. The new car I have has two bad mounts, and pep boys only has one rubber.

I have to disagree with that. 11 hours later I got my mounts in. Subtract that idiot time (no one could give me the right parts or even matching mounts) I worked on them for 8-9 hours. Exhaust was a PITA when your car is on the ground.

Well I haven't decided on the motor mounts yet, but I am looking into some other things.

I've started a 2nd job and money is rolling in quite fast now. I'll have a good bit of money left over for the project. I'm pondering the idea of getting some long tubes and an offroad h pipe. Would a set of 1 5/8 LTs serve me well? What kind of power gains am I looking at? Would they be worth it?

The LTs I have in mind are these...

Nothing fancy. Opinions/suggestions?

I've always just take the three bolts out, jack up motor 3-4inches and slide bad mount out. The exhaust doesn't need to be touched.

I have to say from having both shortys and now long tube headers on this cougar that I like the LT beter. For me being on my back and wrestling with the hpipe for the shorty is 100xs harder than installing the short h-pipe that the long tube headers use. Plus all the bolt are right there you bearly have to get under the car to put it on.

I have BBK longtubes and BBK hpipe on my car now they fit OK  The driver side header ishiznitting the steering knuckle. This might be because my 408w is wider at the top so maybe with the 302 it will have enough clearence. I ordered a steering shaft from Summit this week I'll have pics of the install soon if your curious of how it looks just in case you run into that problem.

As far as which headers to buy, That depends on you pocket, If it were me I would just buy a set of used headers and h-pipe.

On a street car, I don't feel the long tubes are worth the difference... I run 1515 BBK 1 5/8" shorties with a Hooker off road pipe...

Anyway if you need the cats for inspection, it's a lot easier to swap the cat H pipe back on long enough for inspection vs swapping headers and H pipe...

Hmmm ok...I guess I may just grab a cheap offroad H pipe for my shorties then.
