After blowing my engine I need a good DD until I save up enough for a new 302. I was looking at this now it would be sweet to have a Cougar and a Thunderbird, one being blue and the other red would be pretty cool too. Anyway, I have some questions:

Do 3.8s get better gas mileage than 5.0s?
The heater doesn't blow so would that be the heater core?
I heard these blow head gaskets left right and center, anyway to judge when its gonna go?

I also found this one:

It's listed by the same guy too, I like the color and all but I want something that would be fairly good on gas and another 5.0 isn't really something I want.

I got about 27 mpg outta my 88 3.8 tbird, highway.  white smoke out the tailpipe indicated something went wrong...I'm guessing a head gasket.  ]

I never really do any highway driving, pretty much all city. I just can't stand FWD in the winter, just driving my moms Regal for a couple days its just really frustrating. The snow just pulls you and you're going, with RWD you can put your foot down a little, get the rear end to kick out and then pull it back in. I don't think I'll ever buy a front wheel drive car.

I have a 3.8 and a 5.0 HO. The 3.8 gets a bit better mileage but that's probably because I don't drive it as *spirited* as the 5.0 T-bird ;)

No heat could mean a bad heater core. If it blows smoke out of the defrost vents that would be a sign of a bad core.

It depends on the car with the head gaskets. If it was taken care of and the coolant was changed on a regular basis it should be ok for awhile. It will blow the head gasket at some point though. It's a given and there is really no way around it.

I'd go with the silver 5.0 one. The difference in fuel mileage between a 3.8 and 5.0 is negligible, and in fact the 5.0 will often return better economy because it's not working as hard.

That, and the red 3.8 one seems to be sold already :hick:

Just remember if you look at the car: He advertises it as 130,000 km, but the way the digital speedo in these cars works, it could be 230,000, or 330,000 km. Press the E/M button to change it to miles to verify mileage. 130k should be close to 80k miles. 230k would be about 135k miles.

Yeah I heard about that little glitch that the Thunder-Cougars have. I would like another 5.0 car but ones good enough for me; I've been looking at a 2 door Tempo with a 5 speed. My buddy has a 4 door Topaz with the 3.0 and a 5 speed and it goes pretty  good for looking like a granny car. I've lost to him with my Cougar a time or two.

So I guess I'm still hunting then, I need to get a car for under a grand thats cheap on gas, cheap to plate and is reliable. That way I can save up enough for what we all want, well what I want anyway. HO, T-5 and 3.73s.

I'm doing this by way of a 1992 Saturn Sc2...bought for $200.  Still goes, and with an endless supply of grocery bags and a hole punch, I'll be good to go.

My 3.8 car got 450 miles to a tank, driving like a jack ass. My 5.0's all got around 300 to 350 with the same sized tank. Driving the 5.0 like a granny will get 400 to a tank thought...

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Thanks Dustin. Yeah this guy seems pretty sketchy, I was bored one day so I emailed him about one of the silver Thunderbirds and him saying "Same powertrain as the Mustang GT!!!!", we had a little email fight.

No I didn't buy that red 3.8, but I was considering it.
