bus engine research February 25, 2005, 05:28:12 PM Not sure why im putting this here but i thought it might be a decent BS topicdoes anyone have any experience with older 60's-70's bus engines. im curious because i have a local down here with a torino but the engine is an old bus engine with a stroker kit plus lots of wing dings including a blower. Im almost afraid to say this but he claims it was a different V8 engine which were made for larger vehicles and says its along the lines of a 427?,,now to the other question if the possiblity is confirmed, How hard are they to find? Re: bus engine research Reply #1 – February 25, 2005, 07:00:34 PM I know that chevrolet produced differnet versions of their gas engines for meduim duty truck use. In not sure to the extent of the differneces, but a farmer around here had a big block 350 (truck only engine) in his 1976 chevy grain truck. If chevy did it maby ford did too. I'll ask around the shop on monday for you, maby one of the older truck mechanics knows. Quote Selected
Re: bus engine research Reply #2 – February 25, 2005, 09:04:25 PM them there X-brand grain truck motors weren't "big-block" 350's,I think they were a 366...If it was a Ford engine in that bus, it may be a 401, 477, or 534...here's a link for more on these monster Ford engines Quote Selected
Re: bus engine research Reply #3 – February 25, 2005, 09:13:14 PM i was thinking it had to be one of those MEL series engines like a 430 or 462. he said something about it being a stroker but then he did something out of the ordinary with the rods,, thier not stroker rods.ill just have to pry more out of him,, hes not to open about whats in there. Re: bus engine research Reply #5 – February 25, 2005, 10:45:12 PM My local machinest said that the x brand 427 tall deck is only good too 3500 rpm then it is out of steem, only good if it is stroked.. I bet the ford engines are the same way...No sorry for the useless post, I dont know nutin. Quote Selected
Re: bus engine research Reply #6 – February 25, 2005, 11:19:20 PM Scott its probably a FE (352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427, 428) or 385 series(429-460 was also a 366 in a bunch of the big trucks and buses. Maybe he stroked one of those with a 460 crank and made it a Lincoln engine??? ).. I don't remember the MELs being in anything but Mercurys Edsel & Lincolns(hence the MEL designation). If its a FE it will have the W I D E intake that 3 of the valve cover bolts thread into... The MELs have the fuel pump on the front of the engine above the water pump.. I've never owned a 385 series engine, you'll have to figure that one out... Quote Selected

Re: bus engine research Reply #8 – February 27, 2005, 04:05:49 PM yep, sure did, but they only came in Ford trucks over 1 ton though, these engines, when complete, weigh well over a thousand pounds, not somethin you'd want to put in a car or half-ton truck, lol Quote Selected
