TV cable adjustment question....

I spent about 30 minutes this morning trying to get my TV cable adjustment.I did a search here and found the info about setting at the MAX,the MIN,then find the middle and start out a hair above the middle, etc.ANYWAY,after all of the trial and error,I ended up having to set it at the very minumum to get it to shift the best that I can get to shift.I have an appointment next saturday at the tranny shop to get my performance valvebody installed and everything adjusted, but that's in a week. For now,I need a decent shifting tranny without frying. Is it normal for the tranny to be set at the minumum position on the TV cable? My cable has the little snap on plastic clip, not the peg that snaps up into the hole on the cable lever.Car's description below.

1)  Is there any play in the cable?  It should feel that there is uniform tension in it if you move the throttle body by hand from closed to wide open.

2)  If your in OD @ 50 MPH and cruising along, if you put the pedal to the floor you should grab 2nd gear.  With 3.55's I'd adjust so it grabs 2nd from 55......

Well,I haven't floored it at all since I did the adjustment. It seems to be shifting smooth and well.I'll check the "OD to second" thing in the morning. The cable isn't loose, but it's not tight either.I tried that cable in about 15 different spots, and it does best in the setting it's in.If it'll operate well til Saturday of next week,I'm having the tranny worked on a little and he can set it how he thinks it should be.I hate messing with these cables.I need a 5 speed the more I think about it.If I had the funds,I would do the swap.

As long as there is tension you're OK.  Again, it should be uniform......When you get a chance check underneath and make sure your bracket that the cable runs to on the drivers side of the trans isn't hung up on anything.  I had that happen once about a year ago.

Vinnie I've adjusted mine like that and it's all the way at the MAX setting to get it to shift the way I want it. With 3.73 gears it shifts at full throttle:
1-2 @ 40 mph
2-3 @ 60 mph
3-2 kick down at 50 mph or less
4-2 kick down at 55 mph or less (for a split second). Above 55 mph it just kicks down to 3.
At full throttle from a stop trans upshifts @ 5,000 rpms.

Hope this helps:D

Okay, is there a "performance" setting? The reason I ask is because when I take off from a stop light my cougar shifts into second before I'm even going 10-15 mph. This really bogs the car down. When I drive the car at times I end up doing the "1st,2nd upshift shuffle" with the shifter manually.
Only in America do we use the word "politics" to describe the process so well: "POLI" in latin meaning "many", "TICS" meaning "bloodsucking creatures".

Yes; after you set it tighten it a little more not to much or the car wont shift at all, I heard of guys tighten it a hole lot but that’s for the track and I also recommend a shift kit

For me,it doesn't matter right now. After work today (this morning),I'm taking the car to the tranny guy and he's installing my new valvebody and adjusting the cable for me.I really don't want to take any chances with it.
