Manual trans question...

I was at the junkyard today and found a mustang that came with the t-5 trans, but, alas, it was gone. As I was looking around I found a 85 ford ranger 2wd, and it had a manual with the 2.3l in it. Will this transmission work with my 84 cougar xr7? I know it will bolt up, but will it fit in there and be no issues? The trans(auto)in the cougar is on its last leg and I don't want a auto in there if it is gonna be a dog brand new. Thanks

If you use a 5 speed, you really need one that belongs with a 5.0.The 4 banger % speed probably wouldn't be able to stand the torque.A good AOD with a performance valvebody can take some wicked abuse.Mine has been great, and I beat the  out of it.I thought about getting a 5 speed, but I mostly drive in town (99% of the time),and I really don't want to shift every 15 seconds. That's just me.It's all about personal taste and needs. But,get a 5 speed for a 5.0 if that's the route you decide to take.

Vinnie, he's talking about the XR-7...ie the 2.3 turbo car.

You don't want the Ranger trans for the XR-7.

Junk? Or junk and py ratio's? I want a t-5 but I wasn't thinking long term, just something to fart around in that would last until I get out of Colorado and find myself some employment wherever I end up.  I will end up putting in the clutch pedal and all the stuff that goes with it so when I DO get a t-5, all it will need is to be switched if they are that compatible. If there is a major difference, then I will not do it. But I am not going to rebuild that C-5, and it is slipping and leaking. If all automatics are a dog in the turbo'd 2.3, then I need a manual.

That would work.. if you cut the bottom of the dash out so the shifter would clear.  (so not at all.)

Again, don't waste your time with the Ranger stuff.

You can use the pedal assy from the Mustang though.  It will bolt in.

The Mustangs and 83-86TCs used a cable clutch.  Only the 87-88TC's used the hydraulic.

Where will I be able to get the cable set up? Can you still get that animal at the parts store? Or is that a track down and find item?

The only one that is an issue is the little "dog-bone" cable on the bell housing.  Buy 2 when you buy them so as to have a spare.  The main cable is an off the shelf piece.
