Seat Belt Question

Hey Guys,
This is my first post (cool forums btw).
I have a 1993 Cougar xr-7,the problem I am having is from the automatic seat belt.
The drivers side works no problem,but the passenger side has a mind of its own. It seems to pick the days it works and wont work,I can't figure this out for the life of me.

I must admit,this is becoming quite annoying,since the belt wont retract,upon starting the car,my dash says "door ajar" which is obviously not the case,and I get to hear the lovely warning sound whenever I put her into gear.

My main questions are....
1-What triggers the belt (other than power) to automatically retract?
2-Could this simply be a problem of improper door alignment. As in alignment of the..... what I call the "striker post"
3-Do these particular types of belts (auto retracting) have some type of motor?? (I apologize...but I'm not to familiar with these types of belts) and if so....where would it be located.

If anyone has any information on this,it would be GREATLY appreciated.
If I wasn't descriptive enough..please feel free to let me know,as I will try my best to supply more information.

The part that triggers the belts is inside the the latch part inside the door. I'm not sure if the striker bolt has anything to do with it. These types of belts do have motor inside the car under the rear arm rest. The best I can tell you is to spray electrical cleaner in the latch and work the latch. That most of the times get them to work. This worked for my 94 tempo.

Thanks for the info. I have sprayed the door latch,to no avail.
I'm just really confused right now. Would there be a need to actually remove the inner door paneling and spray some wd-40 there?,or would I just be better off to remove the rear arm rest and replace the motor??
Although....I'm not 100% sure that is the problem.......I'm sooo confused lol.
BTW....If I do decide to replace the motor,does anyone know how much these run?

Hit the salvage yard and grab one.

there should be a acess panel for the emergency crank for when the belt is stuck up. Maybe if you spray in there and work it up and down??

Just a thought maybe try greasing the track the belt rides on??? Maybe its just dry and works sometimes like he said. I have had one car with these on it and never used it. So i dont even know if the track is greaseable but I thought id give my $.02.

Where would this panel be located? on the inner door panel?

I suspect the belt won't work as long as the "door ajar" is on.
Check the door open switch. Are the interior lights on?

Nope,none of the interior lights are on. The only lights that stay on are the seat belt light and the door ajar lights on the dash.

I had the  door tore apart today,and couldn't figure ANYTHING out lol. I also attempted to locate the belt motor,but it seems that I would have to take the whole passenger side apart in the rear.

This problem is really getting annoying,as I have to hear the  "door ajar" chime whenever I drive. I'm almost tempted to locate the fuse to disable the warning lights.

Could this be the problem?

Would there to be an easy way to find out for sure? If this IS the problem,where exactly is this located?
I usually have manuals for my cars,but I've neglected picking one up for this car yet,guess I'd better get on the ball huh? lol
