This car never ceases to amaze me...

So I got the new dash in after the rewiring job. Everything goes according to plan - no pinched wires, no leftover screws, everything looks stock (except the new dash is black - I painted it and the console) and everything works. Excellent, I thought, and then I turned my attention to buttoning everything up - you know, installing the lower trim panels, steering column shroud, etc. When I got to the left speaker cover I was trying to push it into place when I noticed that the windshield was moving as I was bracing my hand against t to push the speaker cover in. I investigated and discovered that the glue that's supposed to hold the windshield in, isn't. The windshield is essentially just sitting in place.

As far as I know the windshield has never been out of the car. It has never shown any signs of leaking (the rear window is a different story). Had I not removed the trim for the paint job I'd likely have never noticed. This car is crazy, and it's taking me with it...

Actually we have been having downpours. We got 3" of rain just yesterday, in fact (almost unheard of around here in August). The river behind my property is about 6" from spilling out onto my yard. Today is the first warm, sunny day we've had in weeks. Thankfully the car is inside the garage...

Our area was on the news, as in the national news, like good morning america and whatnot... worst flooding in over a hundred years or something. Actually not here luckily but around the area.

Probably the same storm that has been sweeping the Midwest. Yesterday my brother and i were picking pizza up and i see the 4 horse men of the apocalypse approach. Pitch black on one side of the sky Blue on the other it was intersting to watch the wind play jump rope with the power lines. Lets hope after the windsheild nothing else happens.

The stock windshield glue doesnt harden like the glue now used to put in windshields, it stays soft and when you take it out, it will stick to you. Even newer cars have this problem. I replace windshields alot in the body shop. If you take it to a shop, they should be able to remove the stock windshield and put it back in without damaging it. It will take awhile longer to do so, but is well worth it, because once that glue dries, it doesnt move.

The window in the '80 was like that...however it had been replaced previously.  The issue with mine was that while they also did a piss-poor job of getting the window resealed, they also FILLED the entire area around the windshield with sealer...which wasn't adhering to the car at all...which in turn collected water....which in turn caused rust.
I just today finished the last bit of cleaning, treating, painting of the windshield frame to have it reinistalled.  Hopefully in the next week I can get someone out to put it in place and finally seal the car back up.

cougrrr302, the windsheild in my car was held in with a extremely old hard "glue". I too worked in body shops and don't remember encountering as hard of "glue" as my car had. I broke aprroximately 20 windsheild removal blades, 3 windshield wires. It wasn't until I let the car set an entire day in the hot sun, that I was able to remove the windshield. There was no extra urethane around the glass, just the factory butel. The rear glass was a little easier to remove and the side glass just about fell out.

Thunderchicken, I hope that you get your windsheild all sealed up good and tight. Lets see some pics of your dash :D

Most of the windshields I have removed are on 2000+ cars, and from the factory problems were because of the glue not drying or they didnt put self etching windshield primer on so the glue would adhere. Ive seen a couple that were really really hard and would snap anyblade, but from what it sounds like Carms might be from the glue not adhering or some other problem.

We need a crowbar, axe, weedeater, live chicken and bunch of professional tools to get the original out of my Bird...

I helped a neighbor who is a body man, change mine(had a star/crack in the corner)... The sealant was like concrete... He said that's the way the 80's cars were... I was going to pull a almost new W/S from my junk '87 and it was the same, had Tim just buy one...
