8.8 out of an 86 Gt Stang

Hey all, long time no post.

I have a chance to buy a complete 8.8, drum to drum with some 3.73 gears, and i want to put it in my Cougar.  The Cougar currently has a 7 1/2" rear out of a TC, I am going to guess 85.5-86 TC because the guage cluster [24 psi guage] and water cooled T3 indicate this drive line [I have the 4.03 1st gear] was not out of an 87/88 car....

Can I bolt this rear from the Stang GT in hook up the brake lines and away I go, or am I stuck using axles, backing plates and brakes out of the 7.5 TC rear?

This 3.73 rear would allow me to move to my Centerline Autodrag big n littled with 27" tall BFG DRs out back.

r u sure it's a 8.8? i didn't think they were installed from the factory till 87 but i'm not 100% sure on that. other than that you can bolt it in just as is and it will bring the rear wheels in about 3/4"

There's the clearance you needed.Just make sure you have the right backspacing or you may have to remove the quad shocks.I had to change the brake lines on mine My T-Bird lines were different than the Stang lines.Took about 2 minutes. No big deal.Get to work !!!

You wont be able to use the backing plates or axles out of your 85.5-86 rear.  If it was an earlier rear then yes..

Are we all still in the "bite each others heads off" mood? I hoped having AM's threads closed would fix that.

Sorry, no not in a bite your head off mood... This is one of those times when bad info needs to be squashed... If I replied in normal size and color text, what's the chance the info would get repeated again and a gain??? This is exactly how all the mis-info on the net gets started...

But they did not come with 3.73 gears so I would not take his word for this and check it out.  Easy enough to do with posi, just see if the pinion turns 3.75 turns for one of the axle.

As far as I know they only came with 3.08 or 2.73, with 2.73 being more common.  So to have 3.73 this would of have to be changed over.

I know the guy, it's an 8.8, and does infact have 3.73s, so....

You guys are saying that I CAN in fact bolt the 1986 Mustang GT rear into my 87 Cougar, drum to drum as is, and just that it will pull my wheels in 3/4s of an inch per side? [big deal I dont care about that].

If yes I am grabbing the rear tomorrow.

Thanks.

I am installing an 8.8 in my car (3.55's),and it now has backing plates and axles from an '85/'86 Turbo Coupe (7.5 with 9 inch brakes),and drums from an '83 T-Bird.Perfect fit, everything is where it should be.That's how to do it if you want the wheels to be where they are now.believe me,Chuck and I have been through this.If you don't mind an 1 1/2 inch narrower rear, bolt that thing in and call it a day.
