Transmission problems

Just bought my 1990 cougar 3.8 for $500 bucks, very slick car, great interior.  Well the problem is that the overdrive does not kick in and when you put the car into reverse you have to give it some gas then all of a sudden it slams into gear.  What could be the problem here? AOD transmission.

Sounds like the transmission slips and then slams in reverse and doesn't go into overdrive.:flip: Just kidding dude, AOD I assume?

Whats you idle speed. When I had that high, the car would slam into gear as well

The first thing you should do is check the TV (kickdown) cable for the transmission. It should be hooked up right at the throttle body. If it's loose or unattached, you may have trouble ahead. That may also explain why it won't engage overdrive.

These cars aren't well-known for reliable automatic transmissions.

If it isn't as simple as the TV cable(which for your sake I hope it is) it sounds like something more internal. The filter may be plugged, torque converter may be bad, something could be sticking in the valvebody, there is just alot it could be, and without tearing it apart it is hard to say. Sorry I can't help you anymore than that. If I was there I could help better.

how bout this....all the gears work fine, but overdrive is not there at all
had a power flush and fluid change done....aod tranmission...is it possible that only the overdrive "band" is toast and that's it?

Yes, the band could be making this problem. Try and re-adjust it. That should make it last a little longer.

Often times, flushing the fluid on an old transmission may exacerbate existing problems.

Yeoowsa! You are correct, as it cannot be adjusted! I hate to admit it, but I don't know what I was thinking.....probly about the c3,c4,c5's and the chevy transmissions. I'm an idiot. Here is the real skinny, lets say the band isn't totally fried,  the overdrive servo piston may not be sealing, the govoner valve may be sticking, a spool could be stuck in the valve body itself, which sometimes happens when you change the fluid of a high mileage trans, warped valve body, direct clutch could be fried. But, if it has high miles on it, the band is probly just fried.  Sorry about that mis-info peoples, it shant happen agayne.

Kickdown cable

The kickdown cable is EXTREMELY loose.  How do I adjust this.  The piece that keeps the cable on the throttle body is almost off.  How do i fix this?  There is very much slack in the cable.
