Explorer short/long block maybe

I got to thinking earlier today... If I couldn't get a 5.0 Stang HO long block when I eventualy build up my new motor, could i just use an explorer long block? It would already have a roller cam, the GT40 /  GT40-P heads, an ok bottom end, and it would be atleast 3 years newer then the last "fox" 5.0 HO. On top of that, I hear it has  215 HP @ 4,200 rpm; 288 ft lb @ 3,300 rpm using the stock EFI. A decient intake/carb on that with the headers and maybe a newer cam would wake it way up for a street car I think.

Would there be any reason not to? I could just use my current oil pan,headers/exhaust,induction, ignition, and trans to swap it over tomorow if I had to.

I'm more curious then anything, and I was just wondering if anyone has considered or even done this swap?

I believe you will need "p" style headers. Also double check the water pump rotation and front engine accessories.

Would there be any benifit over a Stang' HO longblock?

If I actually do this, I will put my own bracket/pully set on the car, as that will not be a problem. I was also told that there is enough room to run my Mac's with the "p" heads. If not I'll just go a GT40 motor from a 95-96 insted of a "p" motor from a 78-98

IIRC, the 302's started using hypereutetic pistons in '93. Not sure on the cobra's. They'll probably be alright as long as you don't go lean with boost or the juice. Ok for normally aspirated. I believe the cam specs are a little different as well.
Did you check with Mac or someone who's running that setup on the board?

To my knowlage of what I've seen on these boards, I thin kI have the only set of Mac Equal legnth shorties. However a freind of mine has the same headers with P heads on his 90 mustang.

No boost, no juice... all motor car. Wil be street drivin, maybe a road course for fun and alittle weekend drag racing if I feel like it. Just looking for al all around good 302 base.

I'm planning it. I don't want this to turn into another " just do it" thread, I really wana know if this is what to do. I'm not even doing it yet, I'm gathering all the info.

Is there anything else I need to know or inormation I need before I start looking and pricing these motors?

I haven't even started looking. I wana make sure it's teh right decision first. I have too many bad decisions under my belt by guessing, I wana know this is right. I only want the long block. Complete motor means I'll sell the intakes and assorted other EFI related items

lol, I had to do that but I'm sure with owning a Fila, the Nike 'jingles' have been done to death. Especially since you have many posts.
No dis meant by it, probably just a little overused humor.  :hick:

I know what ya ment man. I'm just really thinking about this. It's better then what i got now, even if I just throw my induction and exhaust onto it. Reguardless.... ya know.

Only thing is do i wana spend maybe a grand on this or drop say 5 grand on a crate motor? I don't wana dig too deep into the motor, no matter what I get. And to me at the moment... this looks like the eaisest and most convienent way to go

"It's better than what I got now"

No, just a stock bottom end. Non HO motor, god knows what it's out of. The rest of the motor ( intake and CFI atleast) was from an 83 CFI 5.0 The rest isn't, and it's been apart before me. I want something fresh I can work with

you will also have to change the timing cover and the oil filter has a 90 degree adapter that needs to be changed also
