C5 transmission Removal

well.  i have figured that perhaps a front seal in the transmission or torque convertor let loose in my 86 3.8/c5 cougar, as i had tons of transmission fluid dripping out from the bellhousing.  what i need to know is
1.  transmission dipstick tube. is it press in or screw in?
2.  How hard to disconnect column shift linkage?
3.  What else should i look out for?
i really dont like messing with automatics.. usually i drop transmissions down on my chest.. but autos no way :-| things way too much for their own good.  do i have to worry about torque convertor falling out or how is it "secured"  I am pulling the trans and taking it to my buddy's transmission shop for him to take a look at it while i stick the other transmission i have in place (84 c5 trans)
Hope yall can help  the car kinda bit me in the rear you can say lol

You should get rid of that c-5 all together. You can get a new c-4 for around 600 bucks. Those c-5's are junk. The linkage should be farily easy to remove. Just remember how it came off for re-installation. Dip stick tube should be pressed in there. And like I said, in my experience C-5 transmissions are a real weak setup. C-4 and AOD's are alot stronger.

Oh yeah, the torque converter, once unbolted from the flywheel, just push it back towards the transmission. Keep the tail down otherwise it will slide off the front pump and input shaft.

Or go with an AOD.

Isn't a C5 just a C4 with a lockup torque converter and oiling mods? (along with a few minor valve body differences).

I know most people serious about C4 performance perform oiling upgrades that are already present on C5s.

WRT the original question - I haven't taken my C5 out yet, so I can't help you.

The converter will be bolted to the flexplate.  There should be a small access panel in the engine plate on the front of the bellhousing.  You can undo that to get to the nuts holding the converter in place.
Most of the time the dipsticks are press-in and held on place by a bracket higher up on the tube to secure it.
I've just used a flat piece of wood and a jack under the pan to lower autos.  Getting them back in place though can be a bitch.  Get a friend to help you.
