Power Window Motor Removal

I need to replace the drivers side power window motor on an 86 cougar and am curious how to do it and what to watch out for?  i can see 3 holes in the door panel to access 3 screws then i see another one on the end of the motor towards the rear of the door.  do i just remove these screws and the motor comes out?  window is in the up position.  i know the regulators are spring loaded and i dont want to slice a finger off or cut it open.  can someone please give me some info on this?  btw... can someone tell me the colors of the wires for the plug on the door for the window motor so i can verify if they are correct or not.  for boths sides of the connector

Searched myself and didn't find anything specific toward drilling out the holes, so here goes:

So far you're alright...window up is good. Don't worry about the regulator...the spring is designed to keep tension on the mechanism to force the window up, so if the window is already up it pretty much can't go down unless you force it.

Remove the door panel, you'll see the 3 dimples that need drilled out, so do that...those are the only holes that need drilled. Remove the screws holding the motor on through the newly-drilled holes, and reach in through the speaker hole in the door, and that's how you retrieve the motor. It just comes out, nothing else but the 3 screws holding it in. There's a nipple (guide) in the middle of the motor gear, and a corresponding hole in the regulator for that guide nipple. That's how you'll install the new one...it can only get installed one way. I guess the hardest part would be getting the screws back in; you'll need an extension on your ratchet for sure, plus a flashlight and some patience LOL. Once you get the nipple in the regulator and get one of the 3 screws secured, you're home free. Put the other 2 screws in and give it a try.

I strongly suggest that you use a small paint brush or something similar to sweep out the bottom edge of your door while holding a vacuum nozzle next to your brush with the other hand.  Then, repeat but put the vacuum on reverse.  I suppose you could just reverse it at first but it may blow more dust around than you can really tolerate.  Do that after removing your old motor and before installing the new motor.
The reason I suggest this is to take advantage of having the doors apart and get the moisture trappers out of the bottom edge of your door.  That crud at the bottom is responsible for the rusted bottom edges of these doors.  Not to mention, you will have metal fragments from drilling the access holes.

If your motor just goes "wing wing wing wing" (for lack of a better term) then the motor is not bad.  The gear drive needs replaced, you can buy it at Autozone.  It is there, but you will have to talk to the guy who has been there the longest because the part is most likely shoved into the back of a shelf in the rear of the store covered in dust.  Don't buy the ones from Advance as they don't fit.  Had to do this to my 83 Cougar.

ignore the pigtail off the motor, the wires being reversed i have seen once or twoice before.

heres the diagram.

Im surprised no one has posted this page yet.  Would you like a CD of the evtm?  i have two "unclaimed" cd of the EVTM i need to send to someone.

keep in mind that the power window motor is not on a fuse.  ITs a thermal disconnect circuit breaker.  If it gets too hot due to strain on the motor for some odd reason, the thermal contacts will open up ,, then cool down before the circuit is operational again.

If you can , snag one of these at a jy cause they make great "short circuit troubleshooting tools.  instead of blowing fuses all the time, you can use one of these in place of the blown fuse while troubleshooting cause they reset themselves.

I dont think you ever mentioned your having power or not out to the motor.

Really?  Must be different for the '85 because I have both sides from Advance.

The one I bought to fit my 83 was too large but the autozone one fit fine.  I'm not sure if there is a year difference.

If all you're doing is plugging in a 2-wire harness...how can this get screwed up? The harness can only clip in one way. Besides, the motor itself reverses polarity so you're always going to be correct, one way or the other. I don't understand...are you rewiring something?

what he is saying is at the motor conn, the car harness wires dont match the motor pigtail colors.

in the world of DC power/current, you must hook things up + to + and - to - with the exception of :
Motors that are intended to reverse
solenoids intended to extend or retract a plunger.
DC voltage/power/current is polairity sensitive.
noticing the wiring not matching was a good observation on your part and a valid comment cause DC hooked up backwards usually allows all the smoke out of a device or if your lucky,,,, it simply does not work.

In the world of AC power/current, reversing polarity will not produce a reversal in a motor or solenoid , making a long story short for single phase.
