Anyone collect swords?

I found some really cool swords online. I am thinking of getting one for my oldest son for Christmas. He already collects knives, but wants to start collecting swords.
I am not sure which kind to get for him. He likes medieval swords, but there are some fantasy swords I think he'd like also.  The prices seem reasonable to me, but I've never bought a sword like these before.
If anyone here collects or knows anything about swords, can you help me out and tell me what you think?
Thanks

I've always been more of a fan of battle ready stuff.  When I was younger I used to love fantasy stuff, but now that I look back at all of that I go "Ick".  Lol I've aquired more of a practical taste.  I also think that Katanas are way over done.  Like maybe one really nice full tang battle ready one would be sweet for a collection, but those sets you see that have the three different size ones (Katana, Wakatashi, and Tanto) are kinda lame.  Meh, but I guess that's just me.

Well, my son is 16 and he's really into dragons and swords, all kinds of medieval stuff. I can see what you are saying, but I gotta tell ya, I kinda like them too. LOL

If he really likes blades, quality is way better than quantity. I love katanas and agree they're way over done, but would love to have a really nice one.

The fantasy swords are cool, but if you were to pick up one of those and then pick up an actual well made sword there's no question which is nicer.

In the end you  know what your son likes. If he wants cool stuff to hang on the wall, go fantasy, if he likes to take them down and play with them, go for something plainer and better made.

If you can find it, go with a nice Paul Chen piece.  I've seen them on Ebay, as well as other online stores.  He makes lots of traditional european designs, as well as authentically made katanas.  He makes his katanas in China using traditional puppiesanese techniques.  The benefit? - you can get a $2000 katana for $500.

If you do get him one, the material is something to consider.  Most "fantasy" swords and display pieces are made from stainless.  They look pretty, but are generally not well made, and stainless is very soft and will bend and nick.
Most quality pieces aren't as fancy looking, but are still very nice.  Carbon steel is the way to go for these, they will hold a nice edge, but need a lot more care, as they will rust.

I have a wall hanger stainless katana that couldn't cut butter, and I have seen a dagger made by Angel Sword made of armor piercing steel that I could shave with.

All depends on what you are going for.
