heh im used to a 2000 elantra gls 5spd being a beater... (in 2000) to me a beater is a car that you just drive.  not a pos that you drive.  basically a daily driver IMO is a beater, b/c it gets beat on on a daily basis.  imo thats where the name beater comes from.

but what if you just drive a 2007 gt500 as a daily, its not a beater. its all opinion.

nah, still a beater b/c it gets beat on a daily basis.  its like having your tbird for shows and cruisin and what not, while you drive your escort to work.  you see, if your driving it to work, and you live more than 12 miles from work, whatever your driving is a beater.  the milage kills a cars value, so even if you drive that gt500 every day, everyday your putting miles and miles and miles and miles on it.  making it worth less and less day by day.  but yeh, i guess you could throw it in the opinion basket.

My TC has 178,6xx miles on it. Is it a beater?

depends, is it your daily driver?  if not it was at one time a beater IMO, but if you take care of it and dont put 5,000-10,000 miles on it a year (the average in atlanta) then its not a beater anymore.

So what about the people that take their cars on the Hot Rod Power Tour and put more than 5000 miles on their car in a year? Are their cars beaters?
Well basically his logic is if you drive your car everyday(no matter how well you take care of it) then the car is a beater. Oh and if you have the slightest bit of rust it is a beater too.

ok first off, your supposed to take care of a car, beater or not.  wow.  look at it this way.

it comes down to what you use it for... DD?  BEATER.  garage kept and looked after like a hawk... NOT A BEATER.

Beater. As defined by Wiki.

Quote
A beater is a term for a car that has long ago seen its better days; a "junkmobile", "banger" or a jalopy (I love that word) ; one that you almost would pay somebody to take off your hands rather than pay money to fix it up.

See thats just it, to me(and it seems most others here) a beater is a car that has not been well taken care of that is used as a DD or even just for winter. As far as i am concerned just cause you buy a car that hasnt been taken care of before you get it doesnt make it a beater if you plan on fixing it. I would love to find a cheap car that was someone elses beater and fixing them.

ah ok, well your logic and wikipedia has the logic that a car that looks like shiznit is a beater.  the thunder bird, no offense to the owner, looks like a mess.  dents and rust from every angle.  i guess i have to make this as dumb as possible.  you drive it daily, your ruining your car with milage and everything else the road throws at you.

Well, cars are meant to be driven and enjoyed, and I do just that with my car. I take it for what it is, a $300 in good mechanical condition.

On a side note... I never thought tailpipes would be so hard to install... though I think 99% of the problem is I think the lers were mounted too far forward on the car by the shop I took it to...

I hate that way of thinking. I don't care if i owned the rarest car in the world i would still drive it whenever i wanted to. Cars are made to be driven
The other day on a show(dont remember what it was right now though)they were at a big show(I think it was the Year One show) and everybody they talked to said they drive their cars.

The last guy said:
"If you see my car on a trailer, call 911 because it has been stolen"

if my cars on a trailor its not street legal ;) not stolen. yeh i agree cars are meant to be driven, but come on guys, you dont drive your prize possession (unless its newer than 1995) against the elements.  thats what the beater is for.  im sure you guys up north with all the salt dont drive your birds in that .  at least i hope you dont.
