Power steering pulley's May 17, 2007, 12:13:13 AM Any one know why in 1986 Ford used 2 types of AC pumps? As a result of this I have an odd and what no one seems to have heard of power steering pulley. It is both v-belt and serpentine. Model is e5de-3d673-aa.Does anyone know if Ford used these on any other model/year? Or if there is a cross reference chart some where? Junk yards around here can't seem to find it and mine is bent, i think.tc Quote Selected
Power steering pulley's Reply #1 – May 17, 2007, 11:12:10 AM Your post is very vague, but I'm guessing you have the HR980 with a 3.8L. That pulley setup was used in '83,'84,'85,half of '86,and '87. Any CFI 3.8L with a HR980 should have it. The combo pulley is by far the most common 3.8 Fox Tbird P/S pulley.Below is a picture of it on my '87. Quote Selected
Power steering pulley's Reply #2 – May 17, 2007, 07:10:19 PM That's exactly it. No junkyard had ever heard of such a thing around here. I've actually seen more of the other style around here.odd.Anyone know why we have two styles?tc Quote Selected

A serpentine clutch for the HR980 wasn't developed until 1985, so Ford had to make a v-belt HR980 work with a serpentine system. You can see the fruits of their labor. One the plus side, the setup made it easy to delete the A/C w/o any hassle. From 5/85 until 1/86, Ford decided to put the 6P148A in. Why? No clue! The FS6 was spec'd for the first year of the 3.8's life. It was also the compressor used for dealer air installs from '82-'84. The FS6 is a larger version of the 6P148A. The accessory brackets can accommodate either compressor. Below is the lessor used alternative setup, with an FS6 instead of the 6P148A. You can see that the P/S pump and A/C compressor positions were swapped. The suction hose in that picture is the old HR980 specific one. Quote Selected
Power steering pulley's Reply #4 – May 17, 2007, 10:50:05 PM That expains why an 86 is spec'd in the junkyard books for the other pulley type. It was the most used for that year. I'll have to call around again to see if i can find the one from an 87 or something.Thankstc Quote Selected
Power steering pulley's Reply #5 – May 18, 2007, 12:12:13 AM as a side note, im using a power steering pump i found on a late 70's LTD. The mounting and design was nearly the same and the lines are identical. The one major plus was the pully size. The pully size was larger thus making the car wayyyyyyyyyy much easier to steer,,just a comfort thing for me i guess. Quote Selected
Power steering pulley's Reply #6 – May 18, 2007, 01:20:02 AM when my yellow 86' was a 3.8, it came w/the dealer installed air. At least that is what I was told. I'm pretty sure that is part of the reason for 2, but someone on here has to know more about this. Quote Selected
Power steering pulley's Reply #7 – May 22, 2007, 11:51:05 PM Well I hit the U-pull-yard last weekend and got one that works. The vpulley is much larger than the original but, atleast i can dive the car. It came of a mid 80's LTD. What's odd to me is that ford would make 2 cars with the same pulley setup but give the LTD's a larger pulley for the airconditioner. Just doesn't make any sense.Usually they have one of my pully up there but all of the cars were turbos or v8's. You should have seen this turbo that was up there. It was in really good shape and 100% complete w/ no rust. Sad to see it there. only had 150k on it. Shame to see a car like that go to waste.tc Quote Selected
