I have a 99 that has not given me any problems that i did not expect from a highmile first year vehicle (mind you i did buy it used). But after about 2 thousand miles (103,***) the transaxle went to , thank god i bought the extended warranty. Then i had a check engine light come on an idle air control valve and a computer reprogram which Byryder also ate. Thats about the extent of the problems i have had with the car, if you want the same for a slightly cheaper price tag i would consider a Contour. Personally driving the 87 (RWD) then going to the 99 (FWD) i think the new cougar has some balls it just needs that SVT Contour sc to liven the party up.

Me and the wife bought one brand new in March of 2000 and still have it.  It's just coming up on 82,000 miles and has been a trooper.  Ours is a V6 automatic.  We've replaced the alternator at around 65000 miles and both front wheel bearings at around 75000 miles.  Other than that it's been the usual wear and tear items; brakes, tires, fluid changes and whatnot.  The car has IMRC's and wakes up when she hits about 3000 rpm.  Off the line it's a bit of a pig.  It's been real reliable though.
