Is it Worth IT?

so my buddies family has an '85 GT with T-Tops an a 5 speed sitting in their garage. i was talking about getting it from them about 2 months ago an just havent followed up on it. if i make a good offer its mine cause his dad wants it gone an his older bro wants to fix it up. it needs a Carb but other than that its in pretty good shape. paints tied and the decals are too, but its 22 years old. If i bought this i would have to sell my car for more than im buying this one for. I CAN'T come out with a loss on this. So what do you guys think my car is worth and what do you think i should offer on the GT? i think its in the low 110, 120,xxx miles. ten holes on it willl go with my car and im swaping stereos over. other than that its good. the front is black now but rattle canned and the TC hood is flat black. needs brakes and susp. but everyone loves the black and chrome. might not be the best time to do it but if i can make a little it would help out right now.

do you have any pcis of your cat on the any 10 holes?  isnt the paint above fair on the cat too?  im sure you can pull a jackass to it for 5000 easy.  autotrader it for a month with 5000 OBO and see what people offer as they call about the car.

1985 Mustang GT
Total GT’s produced: 42,428
GT Hatchbacks: 36,879
1985 T-Tops - 30% or about 11,064 GT T-Top Hatch Stangs

So, no, I would not get the car. It's not rare, it's not particularly "desirable" unless it's your one and only dream car. The ONLY way I'd consider one is if it was 1 of 90 Twister II Mustangs produced in October 1984, but even then it would only be to re-sell.

I'd like it, I love the style of 85 stangs. Only thing is if I had to choose a fox bird or that, it would be the bird. If you can do both, I'd do it.

Wait, what is a "Twister" Stang? Like some package like the Fila or what?

http://www.mustanggt.org/twister/twister2.htm

It's a Kansas Dealer sticker package. It's absolutely nothing special but Stang collectors eat cars like that up because there simply wasn't a "range" of good, collectible performance cars like the early years or even our fox era TBirds/Cougars.

Beside the fact that 65-73 Mustang guys get 5 different body styles between the years on top of coupe, fastback, and convertible, they also get tons of limited and special cars. GT, GT350, GT500, Mach 1, GT500KR, Boss 302, Boss 351, Boss 429, GT-CS, Twister Mach 1, big-blocks cars, drag-pak cars, etc, etc.

We get early and late bodystyles, convertibles, 2 different performance versions (2.3T and 5.0) on top of rare options (leather, moonroof, wing windows) and all of the limited and special cars like FILA's, Blue Max's, Turbo Coupe's, XR7's, TC Mach 1 SE's, 20th Anny Cougars, 30th Anny TBirds, etc etc.

79-93 Stang just don't have as much, or nearly the rarity, to choose from.

From the Mustang Registry:

Quote
1985 Twister II's came with the following:

Exterior "Twister II" decals – consisting of a large set of black stripes with the cut-out words "TWISTER II" running the length of the rocker panel below the rub strip on each side of the car and a smaller black "tornado with eyes" decal directly in front of each rear wheel (above the embossed "GT" on the rub strip).  These decals were not applied at the factory, rather they were all applied at the Claycomo Ford plant transport lot near Kansas City, MO.

Bronze dash plate - this plate reads "1985 Limited Edition TWISTER II, Kansas City District, October 1984" with a running horse emblem/tornado design in the center and was to be placed on the passenger side dash.  Many Twister II's do not have these as the plates were shipped separately to the dealers and unfortunately, it is believed many of them ended up in the hands of salespeople or other dealership personnel as keepsakes instead of being placed on the cars.

Alabaster coaster - this reads "1985 Limited Edition TWISTER II, Kansas City District" with a running horse emblem/tornado design in the center.  This was to be given to the new owner of the car upon purchase, however, as with the dash plates, these often found their way into the hands of dealership personnel instead of the new owner.

Press package - this featured a press release about the 1985 Twister II and a picture of the Twister II along with the original 1970 Mach 1 Twister Special.  Similar to the coaster, this was supposed to be given to the new owner of each Twister II, but, in many instances, the owners never received one.

An authentic 1985 Twister II must have ALL of the following (in addition to the items described above):

DSO code of "53" (Kansas City District Sales Office) - this code can be found on the middle/lower right side of the certification label (aka driver's door tag) - this code can also be found on the original window sticker, owner's warranty card or build sheet if the door tag is unreadable or unavailable.  The "53" DSO covered dealerships in large parts of Missouri and Kansas.

Scheduled build month of October 1984 -  this can be confirmed by looking in the upper left corner of the driver's door tag - it should say "Date: 10/84" (note: the "actual" build date such as on the owner's warranty card may be late September).

VIN in a certain number range - while the 90 1985 Twister II VIN's are not consecutive like the original 1970 Twister Specials, the last 6 digits of their VINs do fall within a few certain number ranges - the last 6 digits of the VIN must fall in the following ranges 109800-109899, 110300-110399 or 112200-112299. (NOTE - other non-Twister II Mustangs do fall within these ranges so a VIN number in these ranges alone does not positively confirm a car is a Twister II, it should meet all of the other criteria listed also).  The VIN numbers can be found in a number of places on a car and they should be compared to ensure that they all match (for example, sometimes the driver's door is replaced with one from a different car and the door tag would therefore show the incorrect data for the car).  The VIN can be found in the following places:  metal tag on driver's dash at the base of the windshield, driver's door tag (middle of tag) and buck tag (last 6 digits only).

Limited exterior paint colors - the vast majority of Twister II's were Jalapena Red (aka Bright Red) (2R), however they were also produced in only three other colors - Oxford White (9L), Medium Canyon Red Metallic (2A) and Silver Metallic (1E) - the original paint color can be verified by checking the code on the middle/lower left side of the driver's door tag - this code can also be found on the original window sticker, warranty card, build sheet or buck tag if the door tag is unreadable or unavailable.

Since Twister II's were a Kansas City Sales District promotional car, there was nothing on the window sticker indicating it as a Twister II.  There are also no distinctive markings on the driver's door tag, buck tag or buildsheet that identify the car as a Twister II.  We have heard that some dealers added their own additional window sticker to mark up the price of the Twister II over the standard GT price (per the original owner of a Twister II convertible, the dealer charged an extra $85 for his Twister II over a regular '85 GT).

Yes still in that spot. Its not that im in love with the car total, i mean the Cat is my First car an Has a HUGE place in my heart, but i LOVE T-Tops. and the T 5 is all fun. Like i said in the Original post( if you didnt read it all i dont blame you it was WAY to long) i would need to make a little off of it if i did it. i couldnt break even, even. just a few hundred is cool not trying to make a Killing or even alot but just to were i dont hurt my situation worse. Its just a thought ive been having, and his Bro is coming home soon from College so if im going to get it i need to start the transaction soon.

This'll probably piss a lot of people off here, but year for year and condition for condition, a 5.0, 5-speed Fox Mustang with a T-Top is going to be worth more than a Fox Bird or Cat. Much more. The Bird or Cat would have to be something special to bring more than the Mustang.

I wouldn't give my T-Bird up for one, but I'd love to have a T-Top Stang - so much so that I actually considered a V6/auto model two years ago that a local gas jockey had. Naturally, the V6 woulda been yanked in favour of a V8, but I wanted that car. It was an incredibly ugly colour, too - a dark greyish-brown. I was actually talking with the kid about buying it and he went and wrecked it...
