Need help, Windows Media Player has dark playback

Hey guys was wondering if someone can give me a hand. I just did a clean install on a xp pro box and everything is done (all the updates etc..) one thing I notice is when I play a video with windows media player 11 it is waaaay too dark. I play the same video with a different player and it looks find.

So far I tried:

-uninstalling wmp 11 and running windows media player 9 same problem

-reinstalling wmp 11 and trying a video and have same problem

-looked through all the wmp 11 settings (brightness and contrast)    all are on default settings (never changed anything

-did a google search on the problem, seems pretty common. Some people said to unistall all the codecs and reinstall, I think this is my problem but I'm not sure how to uninstall codecs.

-I tried banging the computer against the wall but that didn't work either :beatyoass:

thanks

Finally!  Someone with the same problem as me!  My DVD software does the same thing (as well as windows media player) and I've yet to find a solution except for a workaround that's a PITA:  If you start another movie player with a different movie, then start WMP the video in WMP will be of normal brightness.  Also, as I recall, uninstalling, then reinstalling the Xvid or Divx codecs temporarily fixed the problem, but I've found no permanant solution.

I'm still using Win2k, so WMP 11 is out for me.

I have: WMP 9
Cyberlink Power DVD also

Can't remember what brand of video controller I have but it's a GeForce 6600 chip.

This is why, Nvidia cards are notorious for displaying dark video. You need to go into the Nvida control panel via the advanced tab under the display properties and play around with the gamma until you get a good mix brightness without washout. Also another solution for the problem would be to go buy an ATI card.

Only problem is its only the windows media player thats affected.. if I play the same video with another player its fine.

Hey since we both have that cyberlink power dvd I'm going to uninstall that I wonder if its a codec or something from cyberlink causing it

Try messing with the overlay brightness in the Nvidia control panel.

Okay looks like its fixed its been about a week now and the playback in media player 11 is perfect now.

My fix was upgrading to the latest nvidia drivers from their site. I would have never guessed that the drivers could affect WMP and not the ati player or quicktime...

Thanks for the replys :)
