Opinions and stuff January 19, 2005, 10:56:28 PM well, we all know my situation with my red bird, 90% chance i blew it up, drove about 20 miles with NO coolant, at speeds of around 90-100mphas for my TC, it needs tires, valve cover gasket, and has a hole or crack in the coolant resivoir, and its drivable, but it needs a heater coremy dad is trying to tell me that if my red bird blew a headgasket, that he's cancelling insurance for me untill i can fix the turbo coupe completely, as in replace every brake component (which isnt needed), replace the entire exhaust (needs catback), heater core, tail light thats cracked, every hose, he probably would want me to stitch the hole in the seat and repaint it too...now, in this season, i need a car to drive, to get a job, to get money, to fix every detail in the car, because my savings from the last job is minimal, so my situation is:im thinking about calling the insurance company, swapping the insurance to the TC, tagging it, swapping the wheels and tires from the red bird onto it, and fixing the heater core at a later datewhat do you guys think i should do? he wouldnt do anything if i went and did all this, other than be mad, my dad is a punk and doesnt follow through with actions, so trouble is no worry of mine Quote Selected
Re: Opinions and stuff Reply #1 – January 19, 2005, 10:59:11 PM the other amusing thing is, he is so buttstuff about my turbo coupe being "safe", he is allowing me to drive a car that has a little compression fitting joining the brake lines together for the rear brakes...i think thats a little more dangerous than exhaust... Re: Opinions and stuff Reply #2 – January 19, 2005, 11:01:32 PM I would switch the insurance over to the 2.3, brakes aren't too bad of a job to do. The heater core job depends on where you live. Sounds like a good time to drop a 5.0 into the red one Edit: exhaust is an easy fix, just put a single pipe coming out the side behind the wheel . The 2.3 kinda sound like john deere tractors with open exhaust. Quote Selected
Re: Opinions and stuff Reply #3 – January 19, 2005, 11:14:13 PM the thing is, it doesnt need brakes, ive had the car in the air, all the lines are sound, ABS works, the e-brake could use some help, but thats no biggie, nor safety concernheater core will suck, im in MD, we just got like, 2 inches of snow, and maybe 10 more on the way :( Quote Selected
Re: Opinions and stuff Reply #4 – January 19, 2005, 11:33:07 PM I think I've got the solution to your problem! Get full coverage insurence on both cars. Hop in the TC and get up to about 60 mph, and plow into the other one! Then take the $25 the insurence company will give you for both cars and buy yourself a used Bicycle! :flip: J/KI'd say get the TC going and drive it till you can get the other one going. Re: Opinions and stuff Reply #5 – January 20, 2005, 12:42:57 AM haha, fuggeri gotta try to make a few bucks here shortly to help fund the TC, then ill start cracking on it Quote Selected
Re: Opinions and stuff Reply #6 – January 20, 2005, 12:49:21 AM why dont you just switch out the tires and such from your red on, It is gonna be parked until you have more money anyways Quote Selected
Re: Opinions and stuff Reply #7 – January 20, 2005, 01:09:33 AM thats the plani have tires for the TC, but it costs money to mount and balance em, so ill swap turbines on and in the spring, take advantage of em being off to refinish them well, im gonna put the TC on the road, got some stuff to do before i do, but itll be on the road probably soon Quote Selected
Re: Opinions and stuff Reply #8 – January 20, 2005, 01:42:30 AM sorry I forgot that you put that in there Quote Selected
Re: Opinions and stuff Reply #9 – January 20, 2005, 09:44:44 AM Mounting and balancing tires. If you want your new tires on your TC go to a wal-mart with a tire center. If you drive the car there, it will cost about $13 per tire to have mounted and balanced. If you put the car in the air and take the wheels off, take them and your new tires to wal-mart, walk them in, it will cost about $8 per tire. If you do this be sure that they put any wheel weights on the inside of the rim. When they are on the outside, they look bad and it makes it nearly impossible to keep your wheels clean. If your tires on your red bird are good, just do what you said and move them over. I wouldn't worry about the exhaust unless it needs it to pass inspection. That being the initial to get it tagged and on the road or emissions. As for the heater core, if it is leaking and you don't plan on replacing it now, you will need to connect the hoses going into the heater core together to keep antifreeze from coming into your interior. Living in MD too, the weather flat out sucks right now. If you are going to change your core, you really need a sheltered place to do it. If you have one, put in a space heater and you will be fine.As for the brakes, if the car stops with no problems, I wouldn't worry about them yet. Quote Selected
Re: Opinions and stuff Reply #10 – January 20, 2005, 09:54:32 AM Actually, I used to be a tire-man. You need to place weights on the inside and outside to get a propper ballance. Quote Selected
Re: Opinions and stuff Reply #11 – January 20, 2005, 11:06:00 AM Shawn, can't you just put the 15's off of the Red car onto the TC? Or are they the older casting that won't clear the brakes? Quote Selected
Re: Opinions and stuff Reply #12 – January 20, 2005, 11:33:21 AM I can't see why the turbines won't fit. Besides, he can't just swap the tires - the wheels aren't even the same size. Good luck, Shawn. If you need any help, let me know. I have some new u-joints I found the other day. I guess I forgot to put them on the '88. Quote Selected
Re: Opinions and stuff Reply #13 – January 20, 2005, 11:54:46 AM I've heard some earlier castings of turbines 86 and earlier, won't clear the calipers on 11" rotors. Quote Selected
Re: Opinions and stuff Reply #14 – January 20, 2005, 12:03:06 PM 5.0willgo: i know of a local gas station that will mount and balance em for 25 bucks a pair, i called walmart, and they wont even do them unless i buy tires from themtemporarily, i am going to put the Turbines on the TC, 15's will clear the brakes, and the turbines have tires with less than 6K miles on empassing inspection is no issue of mine, i know enough people to not worry about itspace heater? space heaters are for punks, i can live with being cold for 20 minutessi have a place i can go to do my heater core, i just need the car tagged to get there, so ill probably tag it, drive it for a bit, then throw a heater core in it, i might need to call on someone for help, but i should be able to manage to do it myselfoldraven: i dont have any weights on the outside lip of my turbines, and theyre balanced fine, the guy used conventonal weights on the inside lip, and then stick ons deeper inside the wheel to achive the balance Quote Selected
