Making a 87 Aniv Naughty More HP

Hey Guys I am planning on rebuilding my 87 Aniv 5.slow to a 5.Go. I was thinking of rebuilding it from the pan to Intake.  I want to keep the block so the numbers match. This is what I want to use. I went with the Speed Pro forged pistons 30 over. I like the way the Cobra R intake looks. I just don't know if I should go with something else. They say the R is good for up to 350 horse. I can't find anywhere that say how big is the intake plenum is on the R 60mm,65mm,70mm. I was thinking about 1.7 pedistal Ford Racing rockers. I was also thing about a Ford racing E 303 cam. I am stuck on the heads. I was thinking about the Edelbrock Performer Rpm heads with 1.90/1.60 valves. 60cc chamber it should put me at around 9.2:1 comp.  I just don't like the price of them. Do you think I can get that out of a set of GT-40 heads. I heard the gt-40 P heads were a pain in the a*s for plugs and exhaust manifolds. I was also thinking about putting a supercharger on it down the road. Do you think my compression might be too high. I am thinking with theses parts I should be at around 350 hp:hick:

well i dont know near enough to tell you yes or no but it sounds like it would be sick if that worked, and i wish you luck.

and oh yeah since im first here and havent seen any yet, post some PICS of your ride!!!

says you got 1 post so i guess this is is, welcome fellow 20th Anny cat owner! good call on keeping the block.

personally i did the H.O conversion (ignore my sig as if yesterday i fixed the problem she hauls now  ), if i ever come across a set of those gt40 heads or something that could get me to like 250 hp or therabouts id like it, but i want the engine bay to look stock, it still does, i want to preserve this car till i drop dead. and i dont NEED a real power house, just more get-up and go than she had stock.

but member Cougar5.0 has a BUILT 20th anny, looks bone stock on the outside, runs like under 12 in the 1/4 or something crazy like that. makes a nice sleeper! again good luck and welcome, hope you brought snacks....or ELSE.....

Welcome to the board, fellow anny owner.

I can't help with you head selection but others on here can. The rest of your combo sounds good.

I have done the mass air HO conversion using the stock cougar heads & stock mustang cam and converted to 5 speed. Does run better than the way Ford wanted. I'm getting ready to build a new motor for mine. Nothing special just a worked set of E7 heads, a B or E cam, and an explorer intake.

A nice set of ported e7 heads would perform real well. Thats what I would do for(cheap) set of heads. And the compression would be low on them also considering your pistons. The right cam and valvetrain will make you all the power. The valvetrain is the most underestimated part of a build. And post some pics of your ride even though Im not real quick about it. And good luck on here the people are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guy's Thank You for the warm welcome. Yes I am new here. I am glad to see that there are some people who like Cougars and Thunderbirds out here. I rember in High School my Father bought a brand new 87 Cougar Aniv. It was sweet. I loved driving that car. It was a nice handling car. It stuck to the road. I tested it being 17 and all. I had alot of good times with that car. He ended up getting rid of it in 1989. So after I got rid of my toys 71 Gs convert and my T-type. I got married and had a son. Now it is time for toys again. So I sat there and rememerd the Cougar. I told the wife about it. I told her if I find a 87 Aniv I am going to by no matter what. She agreed with me.  I found one of course. So here I am talking with my new friends. My new Cougar is going to need some work. I found one that has not been molested. It does need some TLC. I will take pictures for you guy's and post them. By the way have you guys seen that Hot Rod Do it yourself Series on Engines. It is a magazine that came out in the fall of 2006. I picked one up at Border Books last month. They took a Junk Yard 5.0 and made it put out about 400hp. You have got to see it. Thanks Again Guy's

Welcome. I am using the E-303 with GT40p's and an explorer intake (both ported) on my transplant. If you could find a buy like I did you could get a sweet deal on an intake and heads for your setup. I got an entire '97 Explorer long block with intake and injectors that only had 84k for $450. You would just have to sell the long block or keep it for a spare.

Hey Thanks. I heard the Gt -40p heads were a little trouble trying to get a set of Exhaust manifolds to fit in our Cougars. I want to keep my automatic and linkage. Do you know what exhaust manifolds or headers that would work. With out a bunch of headaches. Thanks

I would use a Trick Flow Stage 1 cam over a E-303 cam.
With either cam you will have to swap the car over to MASS Air to get it too run.

Hey Guy's UPDATE on Naughty Kitty. I have been very busy buying parts or teeth for the cougar. This is what I went with so far. I bought a Powerdyne Supercharger BD11A 10 pounds of boost. I know I was not sure about Powerdyne but a few friends of mine have them in their mustangs. They have had no problems at all knock on wood. They have had them for over 3 years. I also picked up a set of Gt 40 Y303 heads ported and polished by kenne bell. I also have a E303 cam for it. I wanted it to idle and be able to drive it. I went with Speed Pro Forged flat top pistons 30 over with 4 relief cuts each. I don't think I have to worry about clearance with E303 cam unless I go with 1.7 rockers. I heard the 1.6 will keep the low end torque verses 1.7's. Still thinking about rockers. Any Ideas?  I also went with 30lb injectors and a 80mm mass air. I am also thinking about going with the Edelbrock Performer RPM II intake and a 75mm throttle body. They say it is good for 1500-6500 rpms. Looking for ideas. Thanks Again
