Repairing shift indicator display ? March 02, 2007, 09:59:20 AM Have a 87 with the auto on the column and have decided I dont care for the indicator not matching the actuall gear I am in. Someone before I got it had broken the plastic collar and tried to repair with a elongated hose clamp which works fine on occassion. So here is my ?, I have purchased a inst cluster from an 86 with the collar in like new condition. Will this plug right into my 87 or should I go with my original thought of taking it apart and just using the prndl switch and collar on mine. If it will just plug in does the cluster hold the mileage or a different control unit on the car? I worked for Mercedes for years and the car held the mileage as oppossed to the cluster. Repairing shift indicator display ? Reply #1 – March 02, 2007, 10:19:49 AM You can definitely switch out the collar and cable. It does require disassembling the instrument cluster but you don't have to remove the speedo module, though I believe you do have to loosen it to allow the old indicator to come out. Honestly it's not that hard of a job...should take about 20 minutes after removal of the cluster from the car. It's self explanatory. This way your speedo will still read true, as all you're doing is swapping out the indicator.BTW...that's some luck, finding an uncracked collar! Kudos to you. Quote Selected
