Technically you could use '82 and up, as that was then the 5.0 returned, but they didn't really have the "good stuff" on them til '85

Why?
It's Gumby's fault.

Roller started in 1986.

Trust me, 84 back is bad for persomance. 86 and on is EFI. If you go 302, go better heads and you'll need another intake if you go carb anyways. What do you plan to be doing, as this may help the question

In Mustangs, weren't roller engines started in '85,but with the 4 bbl carb, then they went injected in '86.I'm pretty sure that's right.

All I know is I was told mine was a m. flat tappet. To be proven when I pull the motor. Which actually might be sooner then later.

87 to 92 is what to look for.
The 86 had py heads and flat top pistons.
93 and newer had hyper pistons(not real good for a power adder).
87-92 had forged pistons with valve reliefs(good for most head swaps)and the better E7TE truck heads already installed.

'85's were roller motors in the Mustang.

I have the '86 H.O.It has forged flat top pistons,my ported E-7's work nicely with this engine, and it'll flat haul.I'll be going to a 5.8 in the next year,so I'll leave it as it is for now. It'll be sold when the 5.8 is ready to go in.

If you have the space/skill to do it you could pull the engine and have it rebuilt to HO specs. Your engine is a roller 5.0 after all.
