Power to manual window conversion. January 31, 2007, 12:15:35 AM Niether one of the windows on my 86' T-Bird work. The motor in the driver door does nothing, I haven't checked to see if there is power to the motor yet, but I'm guessing the motor is shot. The passenger side motor does turn, but the window doesn't go up or down. I can get everything I need to convert to manual crank windows from an 85' Couger for FREE, but I'm not sure if it's more work than it's worth. I'd like to just swap doors,but the couger doors are pretty rotted. Or would I be better off just trying to fix the power windows? Quote Selected

Reply #2 – January 31, 2007, 12:46:54 AM On the side where the motor still runs, you probably only need a kit like the one pictured here, available cheap on ebay or at your local parts store. The little round things are designed to shear if a kid or animal happens to stick an appendage into the window as it's going up for a safety feature. Sometimes the nylon gear itself wears out.On the side where it does nothing at all, I'd get a cheap multi tester and see if power is getting to the motor when you hit the switch. If so, then it's probably the brushes in the motor. You can either try and find the brushes (pain in the arse) or just find a replacement motor. Either parts store (about $75) or get a junkyard piece. To actually get the motor out, it's a pretty fun task. Once you get the door panel off, toward the bottom of the door you'll see three small dimples in the door. Drill out those dimples with a bit large enough to allow a 1/4" drive 10mm (IIRC) socket. (Don't hack with tinsnips as a previous owner of my bird did.) Then you can stick a socket in there on an extension and remove the motor/gear assy from the door.
