Don't Get Ripped Off!

so i have pretty much made up my mind that im swapping my tranny out. i cant get this one to shift and it is leaking really bad from the hole that i stripped one late night.

So what is a good price to do so?

what can i expect from a shop?
What can i expect from a independent mechanic?

just some round about numbers will help. dont want to pay more and get ripped off.

Swapping a tranny is easier than repairing one. You will need some help though. I took apart my C-4, after rebuilding it, at least a dozen times before I got all back together.

i can vouch for him, **** rebuilding an AUTOMATIC transmission.  i had to rebuild a jerico 3spd with spur gears.  did it in 6 hours with someone helping, and it was a bitch.  and auto transmission will be at least 65-75% more complicated and more easily screwed up.  i mean just one mistake putting it together and it wont work.  at least not work right, if not at all.  as for how much?  labor would prolly be above 500.  now this is for a mechanic that knows what he's doing.  a mechanic that doesnt have his hs diplomah and no certifications.. prolly 2-300 dollars, but it wont last long or will be tempermental.  and id agree that in the long run auto is faster, but 5spd is more fun!!!! now our autos being older and more simple compaired to transaxels and stuff like that.  so it should be very easily on the cheap side comparativly.  what i'd do is go to like 5 different places and just get an estimate.

Some body break it down for me.

so i disconnect all sensors, linkage, starter
ok

now how do i get it down without a tranny jack?

i unbolt the crossmember mount and unbolt that.

un bolt it from the block( how many bolts how hard is it to reach them? )

the real question is doing this while it is still on Jackstands outside how long will it take plus 2 hours for bad luck and 2 1/2 for in experience

a peice of wood... on the center of a normal floor jack.

yes.

i believe there are 6 bolts.. 4 you can get from the bottom 2 from the top.

ok now for the problems of my car itself. im afraid that my motor and tranny sit too far back for it to be that easy. illl get pics of the cross member later but it is at the end if the slots. Why is this?

if i drop the tranny how hard is it to get back up? off the ground that is

hrm.. its not easy.. but if you have the car up high enough... you could push it under the car on the jack.. and jack it back up in place...
