just got my computer from Advance Auto. got one from ebay but the 'tard packaged it in a couple layers of bubblewrap and it arrived crushed and one end of the packaging was all ripped so the thing almost fell out and incurred more damage when i pulled it out of the mailbox!!!

so hopefully he'll refund me my $50 but meanwhile i decided id just buy a new comp.

but this reman one has conflicting codes. on the sticker on the plug we all know and love it says "DA1" and EEC-IV and SFI-SD1, and E7SF-12A650-A1B. okay good.

but then on the case theres this big sticker "REMANUFACTURED COMPUTER..." 100% tested blah blah...

and then a section "Information off original unit to be filled in by installer. Product Broadcast Code: E9ZF-12A650-A2A then A9L.

i went to their website, chose 1987 mustang lx with the 302 as my vehicle browsed to comps, chose one that said manual transmission (want those better fuel and timing curves!), except cali emissions except convertible. was the description. mass air started in 1989 right? which code is right? do they just re-use random casings and put in specific components? so their sticker would be correct?

they didnt even give me one for a manual? what if i indeed had a manual, you CANT use an auto one in a manual car so technically they left me dead in the water. neither of those codes are for a manual.

take it back? try again or get my money back and go somewhere else? NAPA a better choice? i just go to this one because there are more knowledgeable workers than not and its close and stuff. but if id have better luck at napa ill go there. should i be asking for the specific code? lol

I know the reman ECU's I sell where I work could say just about anything on them. I've seen them painted black and relabeled to what they are now. I have sold about 100 different ones and haven't seen them come back. Sorry to here about the you are going thru.

so this could indeed be the one i ordered? whats the worst that can happen if i plug it in and its wrong? or really ANYTHING bad that can happen? will it just not start? check engine light or any other red flags? or will there be engine carnage? :shoothead

cuz if its just not gonna start, fine! ill try it and see and then return the thing if it doesnt work.

If you use a mass air computer on a car without a mass air meter, I think it just won't start. Or if it does it will idle like ass. There will be no damage to the engine or any related sensors if it does run. Basically the Thermactor air system will be askew.

oooh you mentioned the Thermactor system. i kinda decided to plug those holes in the back of the head and didnt put the crossover tube back in, was a pain to get out, figured id save some room. is that gonna be a problem? i also decided to not connect anything from the air pump to the o/r h pipe. i put the valve thing ("diverter"?) with the filter thingy on it onto the air pump and plugged the vacuum hole so all of the air will just go through the filter.

is this going to cause problems? what is the crossover tube for? there was all kinds of carbon lining the walls of those holes in the heads and theyre really deep! ive heard them called "swirl tubes" before? is it like air injection part I (the tube for the catalytic converter being part II :hick: )

Well what I meant was, the electronic part of the Thermactor air system will be askew. If the sensors are still present and plugged in electronically, the pins in the engine harness (at the computer) won't be correct and the TAB/TAD won't open and close properly. But since you've bypassed the system, no issues. What you did to bypass seems to be correct. Sorry if I confused ya.

The Thermactor system is simply a way to provide fresh air to the catalytic converter so that it works more efficiently. That was its original intention, anyway...along the line, Ford figured out a way to also pump air to the heads. The air goes in those rear inlets, and out in the top of the exhaust ports to add turbulence to the exhaust gases (hence the terms "swirl port" or "high swirl"). The premise is that this mixture will cause the gases to partially reenter the combustion chamber, whereby any molecules of fuel that would normally escape in the exhaust would be reburned. The claim is approx. 1/2 MPG, from all the things I've seen.

Does it work? Yes, the system works as claimed. Is it necessary? Absolutely not. Removing or bypassing the system will not harm anything at all. Essentially Ford needed a way to eke out some additional MPG to hit mid-1980's CAFE standards. You figure, the 5.0 was in a LOT of vehicles back then so it was more or less the corporate workhorse. By making that engine as fuel efficient as possible for the time, Ford would be in better CAFE standings that way. In other words, we are stuck with a political legacy LOL. While it is nice to have on an otherwise stock engine, those that progress to a beefier engine usually eliminate it, as it can sometimes cause problems to install it on a modified motor, particularly one with equal-length headers. Also, most people eliminate the converters where legal...so you can kill two birds with one stone. For those that still deal with emissions laws the air going to the heads can be eliminated, and the pump will only work for the converter as originally intended.

I have found the Thermactor system to be fairly reliable. A few air pumps have locked up on me, and I remember replacing some TAB/TAD sensors before (and some small broken vacuum lines going to the diverters). But that's about it...when it works, it works fine and unconsciously too. The key, though, is having a clean, working EGR because everything in the emissions system works from it.

I have just recently purchased a reman ECU from Advacne Auto to replace my bad A9L. I had taken the bad one in when I ordered the reman one. My bad A9L shows E9ZF-12A650-AA. The reman shows F3ZF-12A650-DA A3M. My car seems to run better than it ever did with the new reman installed.

alright well i took it back and went to a NAPA, about a mile down the road, and asked for "a computer for an 87 mustang 5 liter" and then he asked me the series of questions "convertible or sedan" "cali emissions" etc etc so i guess it oughta be right. why dont i know? they could only find one out in Boston!!! so Wednesday, 8:15 pm ill be over at the NAPA pickin up my computer, get home, throw it in, crank 'er up for like 5 minutes, then change the oil, and be done for the night. the next dat im gonna go for a good LONG drive....

grandma was so kind as to lend me her '05 ford 500 (i gotta post pics of this thing its like "pimped out" and stuff) and that thing is nice to drive, real quiet, no wind noise, smooth over bumps and stuff but in my eyes it doesnt come CLOSE to my cougar. besides its a v6 with FWD so that violates my #1 and #2 rules for a car i will own anyway-- 1 RWD, and 2 V8 and NUTTIN ELSE!!!!!

i miss my cat so much. its been like 2 weeks and change but it seems like so much longer. if next thursday is anything like the freak weather we got today (60s and sunny!!!) it'll be windows down, ill be blasting ac/dc on the radio, and blasting tons more noise out the 2 chamber flows with dumps. this is gonna be a tough 5 days...
