Lifter Chatter?

Drove the car to school, no problems. On my way home it stalled at a stoplight. Started it back up ok but when I got home I heard the motor "knocking". I'm not sure where it's coming from but you can hear/feel it all through the RPM range? What happened? The car has not been beat on, maybe one burnout, and since it's been in the T-bird it has only had 25 miles on it. What was on teh morot itself I have no idea. At this point in time, I just wana know whats wrong and can it be fixed? If so I can swap another longblock into the car and just put the CFI shiznit back on. Or go EFI/HO swap while I'm at it maybe. It all depends. Thanks

No worries, it's a mere lifter tick.  He's got some new oil now and a bottle of that STP eng. treatment snot as well as some engine flush for beforehand.  I think it oughtta be just fine.

sounds like it indeed has "been through hell" like you said in the carfax thread :birdsmily:

Uh correct me if I'm wrong but on a flat tappet cam (pre 86 5.0) aren't you supposed to change the lifters and cam as a set? I thought the rule of thumb was new cam=new lifters and old cam=old lifters. I know you can use an old roller cam with new lifters and old roller lifters with a new cam but I thought you couldn't do that with a flat tappet cam.

No, I think you can change the lifters by themselves, but a new cam needs new lifters, as I understand.  Roller is a free-for-all.

It quieted down a bit, but I just finished it. I'll run it for a bit tomorow and report back. If I do have to put a "new" lifter in I will but it will only be a tempoary fix. Depending on if I get a new job and how my funds play out, I may get a new cam/lifter set.

Well I learned something new. I was always told that you had to use the same lifters that came with an old flat tappet cam because of the wear pattern they develope over time. I guess I was wrong.

no, i dont think your wrong,, iver heard some many things that i decided along time ago that im just gonna forget all i thought i knew and study up and listen to the technical side of the house.

it would be prudent to change the cam as well,, but its highly unlikely (except for the 4.2L in my garage with all 4 cam bearings spun believe it or not) that a new cam would really make all that much of a difference.

Heck,, theres more wear on the rockers compared to the cam on a normal wear and tear engine wouldnt you think?,, ive had em under a magnifying glass and they take a beating at the fulcrum to rocker were the diagonal slots are for each oil gally.

It's fixed. Took a good oil change, filter and some swearing but it's back to normal. Also went out today and got a top of the line autozone glasspack:pbb:  and put the tailpipe on the car. Not the best sounding, but legal and getter then open manifolds

Ah ha!  I knew it!  Aren't you glad you didn't ditch the whole motor just because the three-year-old oil needed changed?
