95 tbird help, coolant in oil

Ok,, i have a friend who wants me to figure out what the problem is with the coolant in his oil.  I looked and its reall muddy in the oil so i just want to know what is common with the 4.6L engine.

Is this the year for the plastic intake or not?

I have no compression numbers yet but i will check tomorrow
coolant is not hitting the ground
smokes real real bad
does overheat
fans do come on and work properly
radiator is not clogged
Not sure if head(s) is cracked and not sure how to check without pulling

Just getting a feel for what might be the issues here.  Im looking at pulling the heads and the job itself is going to be new for me since i have not worked on this engine before with those long ass timing chains to the overhead cams.

Im just curious if this problem leads to a common problem or desgin issue.

Sounds like a cracked head and or head gasket to me? Happened to my friends 98 taurus.

You may be right about the plastic intake... that's the only "design flaw" I can think of for the SOHC 4.6. Sure sounds like you've got a head or head gasket failure though. It's not as common on the 4.6 as we 3.8 owners expect but could happen and that one displays all the symptoms. I think I'd rule  out the intake before tangling with the timing chains.

If he's run it long with the oil looking like that it may be better (and probably easier) to swap in another engine.

Check the intake first as it's easiest. After you do a compression check you'll know if it's the head gaskets. The only problem I know of with the early 4.6s is that they have a tendency to burn oil because of bad valve seals. Other than that they a pretty reliable. If I go to the wreakers I see lots of Taxis and Police Interceptors with over 250K on them.

I did a visual on the intake since its wide open to see under it and around it.

Since the spark plugs are along side the injectors and not the exhaust (odd ball place imho), does the typical compression tester work on these engines are is there and adpt i have to get.?

I think the '96-'97 4.6 engines had the faulty composite intake. The common area for them to crack is right behind the alternator.
I would say it has a blown headgasket. Everything points to it...

on first inspection and removal of the intake,, the throttle body was saturated with water.

I was thinking that the only thing that could cause this was a cracked head? forcing air back up into the intake/tb? ,,,but,,, it runs real good and no missing.

so...observations

water in throttle body / air tube and pvc tube
plugs rusted and gooped up
while rotating engine,, rust was coming out in dust form on all cyl
compression numbers vary from 110-140 on both heads

im thinking blown head gaskets and possibly cracked heads.

anyone>?

i see how that alt bolts on now,, pretty odd but works i guess.  I can see how that design could cause a problem.
