ABS to Power Brakes in 88TC---DONE!! Reply #18 – December 15, 2006, 03:39:09 PM Quote from: 84 Fila;118388Isn't ABS "better" the non-ABS cars. I personaly like my car without ABS and the Vic doesn't have it either.Let me explain a little something here, itll help clear things up.In the Turbo Coupes, they have a hydraulic pump for the brakes. Where as the non-abs have the large cylindrical brake booster, the Turbo Coupes have a hydraulic pump, that builds up the pressure for the power assist in the brakes. The system works great, untill it gets 20 years under its belt, and the accumulator, the pressure switch, the relays, ect start to fail. This mastercylinder setup is a totally separate system from the ABS, but its needed for the ABS to work. The ABS system consists of 4 sensors, a computer, a few inputs from the engine computer, and a few relays. The computer uses the sensors to pick up the wheels locking up, when the sensors see no motion, and the vehicle speed sensor tells the ABS computer its still moving, it starts to pulse the brakes. The pulsing of the brakes is done by a relay, that clicks on and off at a very rapid pace, that relay sends signal to the hydraulic pump, telling it to pulse the brakes. So essentially, you can eliminate the ABS part of the brakes, and still have brakes. My ABS is disabled. What Graham is talking about is ditching the hydraulic pump setup for a convential brake booster.Hopefully i helped clear some things up for you. Quote Selected

I noticed that advance auto parts lists at least 3 different master cylinders as being for the SVO but some aren't even the right size. Quote Selected

The title stated manual brakes. Am i missing something? Quote Selected
ABS to Power Brakes in 88TC---DONE!! Reply #27 – December 16, 2006, 01:18:54 PM Well I guess he meant vac-assisted brakes. As for the brake lines, I bought short lengths of line from the parts store (8-12" or so) and bent them to fit. You'll need a brake line bender, but some of those bends are hard to make without crimping the line and you can only make so tight of a bend. So, some of them are a little hard to make. Also on the tee that you use, you'll need a line with a metric bubble flare on one end and a standard flare on the other end to go from the tee to the prop valve. I lucked out when I was looking for a booster, I got a complete booster, MC and prop valve from an '89 5.0, and on the factory 5.0 MC there is a line that runs from the MC to the prop valve that is exactly what you need for that spot. I don't know if they sell that line as a replacement at auto parts stores or not, but if you could find that line it would greatly simplify things. Quote Selected

Reply #28 – December 17, 2006, 02:38:42 PM well I have everything except for the union that goes under the tee and the closest advanced autoparts is in Wichita about 45 miles from here. I guess I'll have to go up there and see if I can find one. I'll keep you posted. Quote Selected
