General cost of having car painted? December 09, 2006, 11:48:23 PM Just wondering if anyone could tell me...I've been thinking about having a "quickie" paint job done on my car so it doesn't look quite so rough. Well, that, and a little bodywork. I don't know how much the body work would cost (needs new door, dent in quarter fixed, couple rust spots patched up), but how much does it generally run to have a car prepped and painted, preferably with a single stage or at least something with clearcoat?And off on a little tangent I've considered...is it cheaper to have a car painted in a flat color or black primer? General cost of having car painted? Reply #1 – December 09, 2006, 11:59:18 PM Mine was about $2500 when I had it done. That included the door jams and the inside of the hood and trunk. There was a little rust and one small dent. That also included the installation of the NACA ducts. Also included was the extra stripe around the side windows and the painting of the molding/etc (the dark grey stuff). There were a couple spots I wasn't happy with. But I also said I wanted "nice" but not "show" quality. I stayed the same color, but it was a basecoat/clearcoat deal.I also had stripped the car (trim, most of the interior, etc). Mine needed new doors a buncha bondo and my paint was metalic black with gold and silver flake... All of that still only costed me 2500$... In the end the welded new metal on the bottoms of the doors as opposed to replacing them... Below i have the before and after... Quote Selected

Generally, the more prep work you do yourself, the less the paint job will cost. 70%of the cost is in the labor, that is until you get into custom jobs. Then the costs go even higher. The type and color also help determine some of those costs. If you have a buddy that does body work, you might get him to help get the car ready for paint and do the whatever body work is needed on your car.I'm not trying the harrass or bash you for wanting a inexpensive paint job, just giving you some ideas as to what is involved and why some paint jobs cost a lot more than others. Reply #6 – December 10, 2006, 07:11:16 PM Do you have a macco around???Cheapest starts out at around 300bucks but you get what you pay for and it's not base clear.I had my 75 coug done at one but i got the premium base clear done in black and it cost me around 1200cdn and inc the door jambs and trunk lid.Stripped the car myself at the shop.Paint job came out amazing and still looks that way after 10yrs(car isn't driven very much)people can't believe i got it done at macco. The total bill was about $650 in May of 2002. I took advantage of a special they had in January or February. I waited until the last days of the special to make a deposit or whatever I had to do to get the appointment for the spring. General cost of having car painted? Reply #14 – December 11, 2006, 02:58:02 PM Well you most certainly get what you pay for but there are alternatives. Do the prep yourself and take your time. I had always wanted to paint one of my own cars and finally got the chance. Find a good old timer and ask if you can work with him and get the experience. I spent almost a year working with a guy just learning different tricks and whatnot and this past spring finished one of our cars. It's a 65 TBird and I must have learned something from him as the car took 2nd place at a rather large show near here. It also helps when its your own car since you will take more time to get things right. My daily driver is a 87 bird and will be the next one I paint followed by my 70 landau. Paint is expensive but atleast its your own labor. Quote Selected
