5.0 TC swap November 28, 2006, 08:28:42 PM Well I figured I would start my own thread on this. I've read every prior thread and spent countless hours doing my own research. So far I have88 Turbo Coupe (duh!)88 5.0 HO motor (duh!!)94 T5 TransmissionDouble hump crossmember5.0 Fuel lines5.0 Throttle cable5.0 Motor mounts5.0 H Pipe5.0 HO ComputerNeed..Driveshaft (My TC is an auto)88 5.0 engine Harness ( I know where this is, I just have to get it)88 fuel pump harness (dito)lers and tailpipes5.0 A/C lines (also know where these are at)5.0 Exhaust hanger for crossmember (know where to get this too)Speedo drive gear for T5 and 3.73'sWhat needs to be done.Electrical: From postings made by those in the know it looks like I will have to change the fuel pump harness. A simple harness that runs front to back from the computer to the tank locating the fuel pump relay in the trunk. The engine harness of course will need to be repined in one connector or both. That will be solved with an hour, a beer and an EVTM. The alternator wires run through the headlight harness on the 5.0 cars. I'm not going to do this. I'm steeling a trick from the ford rangers. The 2.9 ranger has a section of harness that runs from the driver fender well to the passenger side of the engine to plug into the alternator. Its completely seperate from the engine harness and shares the same plug as the 5.0 car down by the headlight harness connector. I'm also going 3G or better so I will have to cut and splice on this anyway. So I think I have all the issues sorted out so far. If not do feal free to chime in.Engine: Motor mounts for the 5.0 tbird will be used of course. I'm going to steel the transmission out of the 88 Cougar, that car is in dire need of repair and will not be using the T5 for some time. Besides the tourqe rating isn't that much less than the 5.0 T5, infact the v6 T5 is the same as the 87 to 89 5.0 T5 with a longer input shaft. I need to pick up a driveshaft out of a cat/bird that isn't an auto 2.3, I'm realy considering havine an aerostar driveshaft cut down and balanced, but I've not had any luck finding a local place that will mess with aluminum. Have to go into Columbus I guess.Fuel: I've got the fuel lines from a Mark7, they are much different than a 87 cougar/bird 5.0 but I bet they are pretty close to a 88 cougar/bird 5.0. they run up the center above the tank then jet over and run further outboard than a cat/bird. They will work fine I'm sure.Exhaust: Found out that CFI v8 cars use the same exhaust hanger as the dual exhaust mustangs. What this meens? I wont have to spend 50 bucks to some punk for a golden mustang hanger. The rest of the exhaust is along the lines of any exhaust thread here. I'm going to use a 2.5" mustang H pipe.Driveline: Two parts to this. The auto driveshaft is different and can't be used behind the T5. Now my delima and what solution saves me the most money. 1. My T5 origbuttstuffy came behind a V6.2. V6's use a 164tooth flywheel, not a 157tooth as 5.0 does.3. V6's and V8's use different balances.Issue: Findng a flywheel that is 164tooth and balanced for a 5.0.Solutions:1. Truck 5.0 flywheels are 164tooth. But may or may not place the flywheel surface in the right or wrong spot.2. Have a 3.8 flywheel rebalanced.I called every machine shop in a 40 mile area and none of them said it could/should be done. One hillbilly told me my problem was the Intarweb! That all you guys had no idea what you were talking about. Funny how I found referance to rebalancing flywheels everywhere. But then, the go to guy of Logan Ohio for machine work returned a message I had left him. Knew exactly what I wanted done and told me he had one of the only flywheel balancing rigs in southeastern Ohio. The flywheel I have is a 0oz balance supercoupe flywheel. I want to have it rebalanced as it is 164tooth and I have a good clutch for it. Should only cost 50 to 75 for a rebalance. Thats aposed to buying a 157tooth flywheel, a clutch for it and a 5.0 bellhousing for an sn95 T5. Plus I'll be using an 11" clutch instead of a 10.5". Issue solved I suppose.More to come of course! I'll be picking the car up sometime this week hopefully. Quote Selected

I have to go out and look under my Bird (88) but if I remember correctly the fuel lines run just out side of the frame rail on the passenger side. They are kinda midway between the frame rail and the rocker I think. I can check if you want. Quote Selected
5.0 TC swap Reply #2 – November 29, 2006, 12:58:04 AM just fyi,, you do know the ring gear does come off the flywheel and can be replaced.,,just incase you find the right flywheel with the wrong tooth count. Last time i purchased just a ring gear for the wifes 351,, it was 18 bux at napa.this just might help you to options. Quote Selected
5.0 TC swap Reply #3 – November 29, 2006, 09:32:07 AM Thanks Scott but unfortunetly that wont work. The flywheel diameters themselves are larger on 164tooth pieces so a smaller ring gear wont actually fit. Quote Selected
5.0 TC swap Reply #4 – November 29, 2006, 10:15:31 AM I am totally confused on why you are trying to run a 164 tooth neutral balance flywheel on this car. Even if you get it bolted on and balanced correctly, it is too big to fit inside a Mustang T5 bellhousing. Even the truck flywheel will be wrong, as it is 28-oz imbalance, which is incorrect for an H.O. engine.Just get a stock H.O. V8 Mustang flywheel (50oz imbalance), clutch, and bellhousing. Done.SN95 T-5s have a longer input shaft and longer bellhousing than the Fox-body units to put the shifter further back in the car. Make sure your bellhousing is the right one. I'm also not sure the pilot bearing in the back of the crankshaft is the same size between the V6 and V8 cars. As for the driveshaft, I know that all T5, AOD, and C4 cars can interchange (they all use a 28-spline output shaft). The trans lengths are slightly different, but the difference is made up by the slip yoke on the DS. Are you sure your stock DS won't work? I don't know what the A4LD (?) output shaft spline count is, but I bet it's the same as the other transmissions. Can you tell us exactly what the T5 you have is out of? It sure would help to know. http://www.allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/349.shtml *edit, after re-reading your post, it is a 94 V6 Mustang transmission. Which is a good thing, as it shares the input shaft dimensions of the SN95 V8 T5 trans, meaning it has a 7.85" input shaft length, a diameter of 1 1/16" with 10 splines, and a pilot diameter of .668". You just need to get an SN95 V8 Mustang bellhousing and any H.O. flywheel for all your existing parts to work. Be sure to put a new pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft, they are cheap. Also check to make sure your stock driveshaft isn't too long, since the transmission will now be further back in the car. The slip yoke needs about 1.5" or more exposed to ensure that the u-joint doesn't contact the transmission during suspension travel.I know this is long, but I hope it helps. Quote Selected
5.0 TC swap Reply #5 – November 29, 2006, 10:31:10 AM What I have figured out is correct.1.T5 is out of a sn95 v6 car.2. Sn95 v6 cars used a different bellhousing than the same year 5.0's 3. The transmission is dimensionaly the same between sn95 v6 and v8's4. v6 bell = 164tooth flywheel 5. v8 bell = 157tooth flywheel6. what I have = v6 bell7. what I need 164tooth 5.0 flywheel = expensive!8. what I have 0oz balance SC flywheel = rebalance to 50oz = cheaper than new bell/flywheel/clutch9. Driveshaft I already know about = save your breath.10. truck flywheel is 50oz balance = save your breath.11. v6 and v8's share the same pilot bearing.12. this is nearly a years worth of research from the time I origbuttstuffy swapped the t5 behind the v6, and I was planning the 5.0 swap to use the larger bellhousing. so uh yeah.. its all correct. 5.0 TC swap Reply #6 – November 29, 2006, 11:01:12 AM Well if you already know it all, why the thread? :DSeems extremely simple to me, you just need any stock 50-oz H.O. flywheel and a bellhousing from an SN95 V8 Mustang. I can find those all day long for cheap. I wouldn't give more than $20 for either one.I don't understand why you're agonizing over using a goofy improperly-balanced giant 164 tooth flywheel when you should just be out looking for the right 157-tooth bellhousing. You won't have engine balance issues.. you won't have starter fitment issues.. you won't have to worry about the big bellhousing creating exhaust clearance issues.. standard V8 Mustang clutch will work.. standard V8 Mustang clutch cable will work...Why are you dead-set on using all this non-standard 164 tooth stuff? 5.0 TC swap Reply #7 – November 29, 2006, 11:14:30 AM Because I'll be ed if you find a flywheel and bellhousing for a sn95 for 20 bucks a pop. This thread isn't about ths "non" issue flywheel. Quote Selected

I've got a couple of friends that swapped to Tremecs that aren't picking up their phone, I'm sure I can get one of their old bellhousings for next to nothing. You might dig around on that site for more stuff too. Mustang guys upgrade their stuff all the time and the castaway parts are dirt cheap. I don't mind picking up crumbs... Quote Selected

5.0 TC swap Reply #10 – November 29, 2006, 02:39:24 PM What you need to do Claude is sell me that V6 T5 and get another :p I would seriously like to have it for the Scorpio (for the extra length). :DAnyway, I was confused about the desire to use the 164T flywheel as well. I can understand about wanting to use the parts you have though. What are the ratios like?On the driveshaft, why not just use the one you have in the Cougar right now? Or did I miss something?
