OK, well the 2.3T is going to stay in the '83 for a little longer

Other events are leading me to fix the 2.3T and proceed a little more slowly on the other more involved projects I have planned.  Life happens sometimes.

As of right now, the #4 cylinder wall is toast and the block is no good for anything other than an anchor.  Everything else  (head, turbo, etc) is fine, so I need to redo the bottom end.

Currently it's a 9.0:1 set-up that I really liked when it was running well.  I don't think the Total Seal rings fared too well (apparently they changed their specs AFTER I did this build) and regardless I'll be going with some Sealed Power moly rings.

I have a good block (I am going to verify the bores to see if they are "true" or not) that has a minimal, if any , ridge and prominent hone marks still.  My choices are to either swap the flat-tops (which are .030") which would require me to bore the block, or to use the std pistons and run with the std compression (8.0:1).  Using the std pitsons I could get away with not boring the block and it's possible I'm going to need one new flat-top piston anyway.  I'll know more about which way I'm going to go when I get the dead block apart.

The only "mod" I plan on doing is converting from the TFI to a single plug DIS.  I could do EDIS, but the DIS will not require any mods to my Megasquirt unit as the signals are the same bewteen the DIS and TFI and will just require some wiring mods.  I have all the hard parts for the DIS and I've done the conversion on one other turbo block (my turbo Ranger), so I know what needs to be done.  The DIS has a fixed base timing of 10*BTDC, but since I can change all that with the MS, it's not an issue.  I was really happy with how well it worked on the truck (I was running .042" plug gaps at 17# boost).

It will get a new 3" exhaust from the DP back since I scavaged the old one for the 80 XR-7.  Just need to find a decent 3" tailpipe

The last mod will be finally getting the intercooler in place, but like I said that will be last.

I'm going to have a limited budget to get this back on the road, but I do want to have it driveable for next year.

I'm still going to dig into the I6 swap stuff and source things like valves and pistons for turbo use, but it may take me longer to get that engine together..but we'll see.

Always moving forward Chuck!

Now how does that 5.0 sound through a 3" exhaust?

The ler and tail pipe I took off was a 2-1/2".

It's not in place yet.  I need to get under it this weekend and weld it up.  It kept raining/snowing on me yesterday anytime I went outside to work...so I said piss on it.

Question- why not just throw a JY short block in there for the time being?

I thought about that, but I have 4...yes 4...2.3T shortblocks sitting in my garage, and I think by the time I toss in a questionable SB, I could have one I know about for not much more.

Well...I took a step back and just opted for a used shortblock.  Getting an 80K mile one this weekend.  Just trying to save time and a little $$ right now.  I am going to do the couple mods to the block to mount the DIS sensor bracket so I can swap the TFI to DIS once it's up and running and I get the tune resorted (after trying to tune it with a dead hole :pbb:) It will be a simple swap since the DIS and TFI used the same signals..so no having to mod my MegaSquirt.

I may toss a new oil pump in it while it's out, but that's it aside from gaskets/seals.  I want to get it back in place and concentrate on getting the exhaust on it before spring.

It won't be what I want, but I'll be able to drive it.

Well the new shortblock is in my possession...

Gotta paint it (it's Ford blue and I want Ford grey).

I'll get it on a stand and work on getting the whole thing back together here w/in the next couple weeks.

The only progress right now is that the block is still wrapped up on a pallet in the trunk of the car ;)

Other than that, the car has basically sat since Oct with the only work done being the removal of the head to see what the issue was.

I hate painted blocks, but I suppose grey is better than blue.  So many projects you have going.
