One tooth off diagram

can someone explain what this pic means,, the explaination is suppose to be within the drawing of what actually is happening when the dizzy is off one tooth.

I must have been absent that day in school based on what i see,,,,,it appears the person who drew this explains the importance focused on the position of the pickup in relation to the rotor.  If this is the case,, how is everyone else going about dropping in a dizzy after number one is tdc?

Heard talk of this condition, but I'm doubtin' it makes any difference... (Maybe someone can 'splain it to this old guy)... Anyway IF you install the dist incorrectly, it must be rotated it to get the timing back in spec, would not this correct the afore mentioned problem???

that was my thought exactly,, if you off one tooth, you can dial it in.  i found the drawing interesting because if you do drop the dizzy off a tooth, you are stuck with the settings or the distance issues until you redrop it in differently.

,,,,,,,,,,,which brings up another point,,  couldnt this problem be taken care of by adjusting the "octane rod? in order to compensate the position of the pickup?

I don't think adjusting the octane rod would be necessary. It all boils down to the fact the pip shutter and position of the rotor never change relation... So as I see it, all that is necessary is to reset the timing and all is well..

Also remember that you set your timing at 10 degrees BTDC or more which means that given the limited (physical) range of adjustment sometimes you might have to intentionally install the dist one tooth off (or more). When I put the HO cam in my 87 I had to pull the dist twice to get within the timing adjustment range that I needed.

Tomorrow I get to do it on the 86. I've got the engine at TDC on the compression stroke with the rotor pointing at the #1 terminal on the cap. Hopefully I'll have enough adjustment room to advance the timing to at least 10 BTDC. I only get about a half inch swing on the dist so odds are I'll have to pull it at least once.

Tommorrow is now today... It fired up on the first attempt and I had enough dist "swing" to adjust the timing without having to pull the dist again. Guess there's a first time for everything!

Yeah, sometimes the TFI module can interfere with the intake and keep you from being able to get it in time without pulling and resetting the distributor.

It's a WHOLE lot easier to just fix it than taking the time to make that drawing.

I drop it in and make sure I have nice range with the TFI module, and point it to #1 on the cap, than using timing light after you start it... right?

I have a "special" cap that I cut off the number 1 terminal and made a nice hole there so I can see exactly where it's lining up. If you make one with an old cap just make sure you mark the cap before you cut off the terminal post and enlarge the hole.

On that diagram they have the sizes of the timing gears wrong.  Blasphemy.

I marked the dist housing with the position of the rotor, then took a chisel and made a mark on the dist housing and intake... All I have to do is point the rotor in the correct direction, drop it in, and line up the mark on the intake... Double check the position of the rotor on the housing and  you are ready to go... I did mine with the timing set at 14* so it's basically ready to run once the dizzy is back in the block...
