Dash lights dim and car dies

Have an 87 bird with a 3.8.  Car has the digital dash and right now the dash is very dim and when the car is turned over it starts and dies. It is an intermittant problem because when I get in and have bright dash lighting the car stays running.  I have replaced the ignition switch and am now questioning if I might have gotten a py replacement one, it was an AutoZone special which they had in stock. It had a fair amount of dust on it so i know they had it awhile. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. :nutkick:

Let me give a bit more info also. The only dim part is the actuall speedo area. All the other lights function as they should and can be adjusted with the potentiometer as normal. Thanks

No, car runs fine most of the time. If I keep the key between run and start pos it will stay running when this happens

My suggestions:

1) Get a replacement switch. When you pull it out, you might find it is falling apart. I had this happen with a switch from Autozone. Nearly the same symptoms too. It is possible that Autozone could have gotten screwed by a third party that was not supposed to sell the defective switches in the first place.

2) Fully check your battery, alternator and associated wiring to rule out/fix any problems there.

3) Pull your cluster and replace the 2 bulbs for the speedo with #194 bulbs. Speedo will be nice and bright. Adjustable too!
