Strange noise

I have this 87 bird with the 3.8 which is driving me nuts. At times it will turn over and start then die, other times it is 100% normal. When it starts and dies I have noticed I hear a clicking noise from the pass footwell area. When it operates correctly I hear no such noise. It has a new fuel pump, relay , and ignition switch. When it is normal its the best car I ever bought for 200 bucks and the other times it drives me nuts. Any ideas what is in that area of the car would be helpfull, Thanks Dan
