anti-lock brakes

ok gang another question from a newer member. ok I got an 87 tbird with no antilock stuff on it. being the cheap-@ss I am I found out insurance is cheaper if we have antilock brakes on the cars as a safety thing. Finding the parts shouldnt be to hard from junk yards an ebay.what Im wondering is would it be worth it to add it to the car and also later on Im thinking of doing the disk brake swap for the cobra suspension with rotors all the way around will the sensors hook onto the rotors for the newer suspension?any thoughts or suggestions on this as well as info on the questions I asked about it? leave it like it is and dont fix it if it aint broke arent good suggestions :grinno:

honestly, the work involved isnt worth the big cheaper insurance, the system is so  complex, i own a TC with ABS, and all the things under the hood for it confuse the hell outa me
It's Gumby's fault.

what Shawn said.... But if you THINK you can do it, here's what you'll need.... All parts will come from a '87-'88 TC as they are the only Fox chassis Birds to have ABS. The '86-'92 LSCs also have the Teves ABS system, but due to different suspension and wiring harness few parts are the same.

Wheel sensor/exciter rings... The rears are pressed on the axles, they'll be no place for them inside a drum brake system so you'll need to swap the rear fro a '87-'88 Turbo Coupe(don't forget to get the signal pickup sensors and parking brake cables as well).

The front sensor rings are riveted onto the inside the rotor(The TC rotors are special castings that have extra materal for the rivits). Unless you can figure a way to mount the ring, you'll need to swap the front spindles as the 11" TC rotors won't fit the std 10" spindle(also don't forget the signal sensors).

Now you'll need the ABS master cylinder assembly and the rest of the brake lines to the front and rear calipers.

Next you'll need the wiring harness and ABS computer. This will run from the master cylinder, cross the fire wall, inside the passenger compartment, all the way into the trunk. Oh yea the TC ride controll system is part of this, so there are approx 70-80 wires in this harness. Better get a '87 or '88 EVTM to make sense of it, and be able to hook up the wiring into a std Tbird.

I didn't give swapping a 5.0 into my TC much thought, but I'd never consider swapping the ABS onto a Bird that didn't have it....

good luck.....

At one time I found a site that had an article on swapping the SN95 Mustang ABS system over to a Fox Mustang. The dynamics would be nearly identical for our cars. I want to say it was on Stangnet.com or Mustangworks.com. Obviously that would also require a 5-lug conversion, but the system seems much simpler than previous ABS systems, including the TC or Mark setup.

I'm not the least bit mechanically minded, so forgive me if this question
sounds stupid, but is it possible to convert regular disc brakes to an
anti-lock braking system?  I fiqure that, in addition, to the brake parts
themselves, such a conversion would require an appropriate computer chip.
But are such conversions possible?  Thanks!

nope sorry man thats not me guess just someone who likes the idea. I didnt realize the wiring harness had that many wires in it geeez like there aint enough in it now but still I like the concept of the anti lock brakes. And the fact that our cars came out with them on some models its possible to put them on all of that model with a little or alot of work its starting to sound like this is going to be one of those that is alot of work though.thanks for the input guys can anyone tell me if its that much of a difference between the ABS and non ABS brakes as Ive never been in a turbo coupe?

If  it's anything like the ABS my '92 SHO had then I'd rather stick with regular brakes.  In most cases I've now trained myself to drive without ABS.  ABS is a dumb system... see a hazard, hit the brakes as hard as you can.

ewww ok so since its part of the harness for it and this is the suspension and brake section and we're on the topic how much difference is there between normal shocks and the ride control ones the turbos had?

by the way I already have to hit my brakes hard for some weird reason if I want to stop quick.

Just a thought, but maybe you should just find an 87-88 Turbocoupe body to work on, instead of converting your 87. :grinno:

oh wow now theres a thought . only problem is if I get a different car then I cant say I did it myself and not only that but no two cars drive the exact same no matter what they are and I love how mine drives

the ride control is even more involved than the ABS

the ride control takes input from the ABS, steering, throttle, VSS, and a bunch of other stuff, has its own huge harness, and has its own computer, not to mention you cant buy replacement shocks and struts
It's Gumby's fault.

You have to really get on the brakes hard to activate the TC ABS. but the stopping power is awesome. Far better ABS than any other car I have driven.
