Good for them. The auto makers don't seem to be too keen on doing much of anything positive without a proverbial gun held to their heads, and it's being done with the money of people who generally have nothing to do with my life.. namely, Californians. Win-win in my book. More power to 'em. It's not like I'm gonna buy a new car anytime soon.. even if I could.

Good point, Bird351, but whatta they do when all the new cars are "eco-friendly"?
Our beloved ole shiznitbox cars will be next, and i know they have emissions exemptions for older cars...but when they produce cars that get 40 mpg+ and are cleaner than anything ever made before...i bet more scrutiny will be paid to the older stuff still on the road.

Give them s.o.b.'s something better to do....like leave us all alone.

Our cars will be targets sooner or later no matter what, I think.. but for other reasons. My thinking is that people in high places will want us all in newer cars with recordable/trackable electronics so we can have the wonders of things like instant speeding tickets for going 1 mph over the limit. Hell, I wrote off any car with OnStar once I heard that they're allowed to randomly listen in on your car if they feel like it. That's how much I'm in love with some of this new potentially Big Brother-type shiznit. If I want help, I have a prepaid cell phone I keep shut off most of the time to save charge.

Back to the eco thing: If they could offer me a replacement drivetrain that gave near equivalent performance and equivalent ease of use (as far as buying fuel and such) but was significantly cleaner and the replacement was subsidized, I'd probably go for it. (but I have no interest in most new cars, no matter how "green" they are) Then again, I'm the one who considered converting one of his Fox bodies to propane. :p I've even thought about applying for grants to learn what I need to know to apply for more grants to start a business researching retrofitting older cars with newer and cleaner technologies that still perform well. Even if I didn't succeed, I'd still know more than I know now.. and I won't have had to pay for learning it. :p

You HAVE to tell me where you heard that.  You've made me want to read up on that.

I can see their point. But, it doesn't mean that the money they get if they win, will help reverse the effects of global warming...I'd be interested to know what they plan to do with the money should they win.

I have a big problem with any government Federal or State being allowed to sue a business or individual.
They should stick to making laws and imposing taxes.
I think the way the tobacco industry was sued all over the place is a terrible precedent.
If they broke some law then charge them. The government sueing is government out of control as far as I am concerned.

Wait a minute. This whole thing is centered around global warming?

There are only a couple issues that come up from time to time that piss me off and this is one of them.

Big freaking deal, the world is warming and Californians don't have snow like they used to and so on. The world has only been warming since the end of the ice age. How are we supposed to know the natural cycle of the Earth when we haven't experienced it?

It is rediculous that they blame the auto manufacturers for this. Yeah, I'm sure the cars are the sole reason for global warming. That's flat out BS. What about other industries? The airlines for one would be screwed if something like this came up for them. I'm sure that what we do, make, produce and so on alters the planet to some extent. But come on, that is such a small, small, small percentage compared to natural phenomenon.

As someone who lives 12 ft. above sea level, I thank you for your support.

While I don't think cars are as big of a problem as some of the global warming advocates make them out to be, they certainly aren't much help. Also, the "such and such is a fraction of the total output" argument is somewhat flawed. Think of it like this: If you try to stuff 10 gallons of diarrhea into a 9 gallon bucket, you're going to have a mess with a measly 10% of the output..

Not to be a dick about it, but I honestly think most people object to talk of global warming because to acknowledge it would be to acknowledge that they're part of the problem.*** Sure, some scientists and proponents of the theory go overboard with it. Some people also go overboard with trying to deny it. I think the truth is somewhere in the middle, and the middle still involves me wanting to buy property a few more feet above sea level..

*** There seems to be a similar reaction to global warming talk as there is to people who use cell phones a lot and are told that driving while using a cell phone is no better than driving while drunk. This society seems to breed an attitude of "I didn't do nuffin'..". Few people want to admit they did or do anything "wrong". Easier to blame someone else, or pretend the problem doesn't exist and shout down anyone who thinks it might.. or call a lawyer if you spill your hot coffee in your lap. It's one of the main reasons I want to relocate to a more personally responsible culture. (but probably won't or can't.. too expensive to relocate half way across the world) I'm not saying that's automatically the root of your objections, but it's possible that your opinions have been influenced or reinforced by people who are objecting on that basis.

This thread probably won't go anywhere but downhill from here.. so this is where I should probably go mess with my new amp.

It's like this: California sets emissions standards for vehicles sold in that state and have been doinig so for over 40 years. The manufacturers meet those standards. No case. The government cannot make a law and then penalize manufacturers for complying with it.
