Rain and motor problems o what fun May 31, 2006, 08:53:05 AM well iam looking for a 1988 5.0 mercury cougar motor diagram. Mainly for the front of the motor. we just had a lot of rain and some of the streets were quite flooded and at one point the car tried to stall but i just stepped on the gas and made it though. Now my car hates me because the lowest pulley on the passenger side has stopped spinning all together. Also i would like to know if its a some what easy fix or if i would just be better off letting a dealer ship do it for me.Once again thanks for the help Quote Selected
Rain and motor problems o what fun Reply #1 – May 31, 2006, 09:07:35 AM Sounds like the smog pump.Either the belt is just slipping, or the pump sucked in some water (just how deep was it?), and locked up (is that even possible?). Quote Selected
Rain and motor problems o what fun Reply #2 – May 31, 2006, 12:28:51 PM delete the smog pump and associated vac lines by plugging them off. disconnect the smog piping and cap off at exhaust and intake. determine a new belt length and purchase from your parts place. thats my advice. Quote Selected
Rain and motor problems o what fun Reply #3 – May 31, 2006, 01:20:49 PM I bypassed the smog pump on my Mark VII, and used the following custom belt routing. I did not use the belt that LoL specified, though. I used a Goodyear Gatorback Poly V-belt 4060872. (87.2" length) I think the belt is from a '94-95 Cadillac Deville that does *not* have the Northstar.EDIT: I removed the smog pump entirely, so the pulley wasn't an issue.. but if you do leave the smog pump in place, you may want to remove the pulley for this belt routing, or it may interfere. Where it tried to stall at there's a drainage ditch type thing in the road. so there it was probably like 2 feet give or take. unless smog pumps just randomly lock up the rain is the only thing i can think of the rain killing it.any how cool thanks for the help again.----------------------------------------------- Quote Selected
Rain and motor problems o what fun Reply #5 – June 01, 2006, 05:28:04 PM If you take the belt off you should be able to turn the pump by hand.If it is bound up I would just replace the pump. That would be the easiest fix. Quote Selected
Rain and motor problems o what fun Reply #6 – June 03, 2006, 04:18:01 PM what exactly does the smog pump do? Quote Selected
Rain and motor problems o what fun Reply #7 – June 03, 2006, 04:30:48 PM it pumps air into your exhaust to lower emissions. if you don't have any emissions testing in your area go ahead and remove it. and cap everything off. if not just bypass it till you can replace the pump. Quote Selected
