Thanks for the kudos, guys (and Karen ;) ) This is really a huge step for me, although it's really only the beginning of the long road to Mountiedom. I've been told it may take another full year before I even enter the training camp. Needless to say, in addition to being excited, I'm scared silly. 38 years old is not an easy time to start life over.

The timing of the news couldn't have been better, though. I'd been fairly depressed lately about my job. I love working on cars but the appeal of doing it 40 hours a week has faded fast. I'm not particularly happy where I'm working, either. I had been casually looking for another job but not seriously because the RCMP thing was in the background, and again, I'd intended on going to private police academy if I hadn't gotten into the mounties. I didn't want to start a new job only to leave it within a few months. Looks like I don't have to worry about that now - I"m much happier at work now I can see the light at the end of the tunnel...

Hey man,

First off, congratulations!  An appointment to RCMP is huge!  One of the most professional and respected departments I can think of.

We don't really know each other, but I've been "on the job" for 24 years.  Soon, that'll make us brothers.  I've been a Federal Agent and a State and local Police Officer.  I'm currently the Chief of a small counter-terror agency.  I come from a long line of Police.  It's a great and honorable career.  You're going to love it...and hate it.  You'll see, do and experience things that the average person can't even begin to imagine.  Some of it will be wonderful.  Some of it will be horrifying.  It's all worth it.  Every day will be different, and you'll go home every night knowing that you made a difference.  Some of your contributions will be small.  Others will be life changing.  Not many people can say that about their jobs.

The background process (if you haven't already been through it) will be rigorous.  They'll crawl into every crack and crevice of your existence.  You have to be careful about everything you say and do, as well as who you hang out with.  Stuff that didn't matter before will matter now...you know, like your avatar pic and your signature saying...;)

There are two very important things to remember as you embark on this career.

1) By far, the most important thing is that you go home at the end of your shift.  Take your officer survival training very seriously and practice good officer survival tactics at all times...and I mean at all times.  The most routine shiznit can go bad, FAST.

2) Never embarrass the badge.  This will be a whole new way of life for you.  You have to be careful about everything you say and do, both on and off duty.  The average person won't view you as an individual, but see you only as a cop.  As such, your words and deeds reflect on every Police Officer, everywhere.  Never embarrass the badge.  A lot of good men and women have given their lives because they wore it

Anyway, if you have questions, need advice, whatever, just shoot me a PM.

Chris
