Evolution of a Bird

Ok, so here is the situation.
Looked for a fast easy way out (first mistake) due to my bird having a broken foot (flat, on a worn out tire) and ordered the 5 lug rotors from Richard Oben of North Racecars based on this…

Quote
Kurt from MO has sent another source for 10" 5-lug rotors: North Cobras. "It's mainly for Mustangs but they offer the front 10" 5-lug dics brakes for $99 a pair.
That I found on CoolCat’s site and since I know Richard from the Cobra site.
They showed up and there not 10”. Won’t fit the front of my stock bird. I have an E-mail in to Richard explaining the situation asking if in fact he does even offer 10” 5-Lug rotors in which case I just messed up my order (HIGHLY Possible!)

SO, I have 2 sets of 11” 5 lug rotors (new set from Richard and an old set from the 84 Mark VII that have some grooves in them)
I have Calipers and spindles and struts from the 84 Mark.
I have a lead on Spindles, Rotors, and Calipers from a 91 Mustang GT right here local for $150
And I have a lead on some spindles that would need shipped from MD.

And my Bird is STILL in the drive with a flat!

Tomorrow is my day off, the plan is to take a day off from working on the house and fix all this.

Once you upgrade to the 11" brakes you'll be glad you didn't get those 10" rotors anyway.

Got a responce from Richard and they don't have 10" 5 lug disk avalable. Forwarded that info to Eric.

Got a responce back from the local guy parting the 91 and he's pulling the spindles off today so I should be able to install them tomarrow.

Now, Calipers .. I will be getting the Stang Calipers BUT Coolcats says
"Calipers - The 1987-92 Lincoln Mark VII had a very large 73mm piston, much better than the stock 60mm piston used in the Mustang 5.0 cars."
What size would my 84 Mark Calipers be? Same as the Mustang 60mm?

The 73mm calipers really arnt worth much. They throw the bias off.
It's Gumby's fault.

Remember to get the flex hoses off the Mustang, too. And you'll need an adapter for the left side because your T-Bird hard line won't go into the Mustang flex hose. Also, dunno if you're aware, but 11" spindles are about 1/8" narrower than the 10" ones where the strut bolts to them. You'll need spacers or washers if you plan on reusing your struts.

(This thread has turned into something that should be in the "Suspension/Steering" forum)

So I went from 10" front brakes and Drum rear
to
1991 Mustang 11" disk front and 1984 Mark VII Rear

I'm not done yet am I?

Per ThunderChickens thread
And God said "Let there be brakes!"

  • I'm going to need a new Prop valve (adjustable aftermarket or the Mark VII would work IF I saved it) correct?
Also based on other things I have read...
  • And this I was already suspicious of, a New Master Cylinder mine will work but is small and will give me sluggish feeling brakes. The Cobra or the Mark master will help this.
Am I on track here guys?

Yes, you'll need a prop valve (gut your current one and use an adjustable - I used a TC one, but that's only because I had a TC one). You'll also need a master cylinder. I dunno about an '84 Mark unit - it may work but you'll have to change the fittings on the lines going into it. Your T-Bird has metric fittings, the Mark would likely have SAE. If the Mark has ABS the M/C won't work at all.

I can't vouch for others, but after thorough bleeding I had beyond "sluggish" brakes with the stock M/C - I had no pedal.  I'm sure the car would've stopped eventually (never did drive it) but the pedal went to the floor. I knew the pedal would be low but that was crazy (I only bled the brakes at all in case I'd have to move the car out of the garage for anything)

Current state of affairs:

[LIST=1]
  • New KYB Gas struts for a 91 Mustang w/new boots (Installed)
  • 91 Mustang Spindles and Calipers (Installed)
  • Mustang flex hoses, needed and adapter for BOTH sides not just the left. (Installed)
  • 5 lug Rotors from Richard (Lincoln) with Semi Metallic Pads (installed)
  • Front edge of the Rotor hub turned to a 45* angle to clear the Bullits.
  • Bullits with 245/70/17 (installed)
I have one other “issue” I would like to address on the front.
Where the brake line bracket that mount’s the brake line to the frame/body. The brake lines from the Mustang are larger than the T-birds and so they won’t go in where I can replace the clip to lock the lines down. It’s threaded through right now but not locked down. I shouldn’t drive it this way.

What did the rest of you do here?

Turbo Coupe soft lines must be different - I simply used the existing brackets. I guess if Mustang hoses are different you'll need the brackets from a Mustang. Ford really didn't help us out any when it comes to upgrading these things, did they?

That is a really tall tire! Typo?

As for the lines... I pretty much just left mine loose. I suppose if you wanted them locked in place you could get the Mustang brackets/clips.

Will the stang Sway Bar work? My bar is over an inch but the one on that stang was larger.. looked to be 1-1/4 or so. did they even make sway bars that big?

Opps yes Typo...245/40/17

Trouble finding a Master Cylinder

No Thunder, they didn't help at all.

Having Master Cylinder problems now. Having trouble locating a master that will work. I want the easiest one that will do the job.
Sounds like a Cobra master is what I want but I'll be ed if I or my parts guy can find one listed for a cobra.... Mustang and design looks right but thats for Drum rear... I have Disk all the way around and the rear have Lincoln calipers.

Anybody have a part number or something?

At the bottom of this page is the only one I have found... yet it calls 15/16 bore, I thought I read someplace that we wanted over 1" for rear Disk.

ThunderChicken, I know you did something like this but couldn't tell by your thread what you ended up with. What Master are you using and do you have the Lincoln Calipers on the rear?
