wondering????

-ive finally got back to the point of putting the money pit engine together, and i put the timing belt on this weekend.  i lined everything up, putting the cam mark on the center alignment mark on the inner cover.  slid the belt on, released the tensioner turned the engine over with a pull handle to take the slack up in the belt, per shop manual, and now the cam mark lines up with the first mark
( or the one to the right if looking at it from in front of the car).  do i need to redo this, or will it fire off hopefully when im done, and adjust it thru the dist.???  i have  no problem redoing it, its just moving that dang tensioner with no special tool is jack the bear.  any thoughts???  chuck i know youve dealt with this before......

What I do is this.

I set the crank and cam pullies up on their marks.
Then I use a prybar (or a big screwdriver) to position the tensioner and then lock it in place with the lock-bolt.
Then I work the timing belt on the right side first. I make sure there is no slack at all in the belt on that side.  Even to the point of forcing/working the teeth into the cogs on the cam pulley.
I then make sure it's seated all the way around the cam pulley and make sure the same is true on the crank pulley.
Once I make sure all the slack in on the left side between the crank and cam pullies, I loosed the tensioner hold-down bolt.
I'll rotate the engine once to verify things are still lined up.

I always wind up pretty much dead nuts on this way.  The big trick is to get as much slack out of the right side of the belt as possible.

If it were me in your case, I'd go ahead and try again.

-ok, i tried again all day sat. this weekend chuck.  if you look at the picture in the link, i am (was) trying to get the cam to line up with the center mark,  but no matter how i do it, and trust me i tried this numerous, (<10, >20), times, the mark will either line up on the mark to the left, or the one on the right, never in the center.  its like to be lined up in the center, its 1/2 tooth off.  the jack shaft and crank are right on, but i can get the cam to the left or right depending upon which way i turn the cam to seat the belt.  its a ford timing belt, i changed the cam to a roller out of a 91 mustang, and left the cam sprocket on it, because thaey match up the same, and according to the ford catalog, they are the same, so what am i doing wrong, or am i??  checking the shop manual:rules:  just says line it up with the mark, but doesnt specify which one or is the whole thing one????  aligning the belt on my SHO was easier than this...:pbb:

I haven't had a problem getting it to line up with the center one myself.  Are you making sure ALL the slack is out of the right side of the belt?
It should run ok like that though.  The cam timing will be a little retarded though, which might be good if you're using one of the RR cams.

it will still have a little slack, but like i said, pulling it as tight as i can will only give it about 1/2 a tooth.  ive went forward with the cam pulley to seat it and backwards too, it either comes out on the left or right mark, depending upon which way i turn it.  i even put the belt on, lined up the cam mark, held the cam sprocket, and turned the crank with the belt on to try to line it up down there, and its still off.  i just want to make sure it will run when i do try to crank it.  i DONT want to have to pull the  front end back apart if it dont start...

Actually...thinking about it...the cam is advanced...sorry..

If you can get it the other way, it will be retarded...

You really don't need to advance the RR cam.

To make sure it's right I run the engine, set the distributor to TDC (0*) and point the gun at the cam pulley to make sure it's pointing at the middle notch.
