Engine Tech / Another Snag
I hit a snag today.... Dropped in the new "old" Garrett T3.. Buttoned everything up.... Deleted EGR... Now my bird is having one final issue.. When I start it up and drive it.. It sounds like a constant backfire constantly.... Pop Pop Pop.... The whole thing that started this off was a blown head gasket and Turbo Gasket. Replaced the turbo and replaced the head gasket.. missed a few bolts on th intake. Could Unmetered Air coming in through the "possible" leak in the intake cause the "backfiring"? I missed (well couldnt get to 3 bolts on the underside of the intake). Intake seemed sealed up well. I know I need to make an EGR block plate tomorrow... So God willing the back of my Throttle Body is going to say "Big K Drop Red".... But the popping was before I deleted EGR... I also need to know the vaccuum hose routing on the Garrett.. I have 3 ports on the turbo itself up by where the VAM enters the turbo.. and 3 ports on the "extension" ( the piece that bolts to the turbo and runs to the Throttle body) I have more ports than I did with the IHIRHB5. So I am short a few hoses. If there are any members in Central Indiana would love a second set of eyes to see what i have missed. But any Input is very much appreciated.

General Fox T-Bird/Cougar Discussion / Eric! Or anyone else who know a lot about thunderbird
in the 1980s and maybe still there was or still is  a ford plant. I do know ford manufactured cars there ... but i do agree probably a chopshop vin change..

the only 1.6 liter motors ford ever made or partnered for are:

1959–1968 Kent (Original) 1.0–1.3L (used in Anglia, Cortina Mk.1)
1962–1975 Lotus Twin Cam 1.6 L (used in Lotus Elan, Cortina, Europa, Ford Escort, and Caterham Super Seven)
1967–1980 Crossflow 1.1 L, 1.3 L, 1.6 L (used in Cortina Mk.2, Capri Mk.1, Escort Mk.1 & Mk.2, Ford Fiesta Mk.1 (1.6 versions), Reliant Anadol (1.3 and 1.6 versions)
1969–198? BDA 1.6 L (used in Escort RS1600, and Caterham Super Seven)
1980–2002 CVH — 1.3 L/1.4 L/1.6 L/1.8 L/1.9/2.0 L Escort, Orion, Fiesta Mk.2, Sierra (Europe, Sierra from '89 onwards, 1.9L for USA only)
1983–1995 CHT — (Brazil) was 1.6
1992–2004 Zeta/Zetec/Zetec-E (Used in Escort Mk.5 / Orion, Fiesta Mk.4, Ford Fiesta Mk.3/3.5, Mondeo Mk.1, Focus) (Ford Aspire/Kia)
2000– Duratorq — Diesel (Europe: Used in Mondeo Mk.3, Focus, Transit, Transit Connect, London Taxi TX1 (from 2002 onwards))

the Esshag V4 and Consul 4 were 1.6 i believe as well, SO as it stands it is either an Alzheimers moment on the engine swap or a chop shop job.. No Tbird ever came with a 1.6 liter motor. Somebody is blowing smoke up someones backside... But it does warrant some further investigation.. maybe your bird was "produced" or "REASSEMBLED" in taiwan.... that maybe... let me know what the documents say on it.... If you want me to I can run the vin by the Ford Parts guy down here in Franklin... He has worked for ford since the late 70's

Engine Tech / 2.3L timing...
is there much power difference between the garrett and the IHI? i know the garrett is a bigger turbo... but how much power difference am i going to see?

Engine Tech / 2.3L timing...
ok turbo is shot.. so im installing the garrett turbo out of an 86 TC... can anyone walk me through the oil and coolant lines? can i just attach them to my 88 motor? i have an oil line that runs around the head to a fitting on the side, and a flexpipe plate on the bottom of the garret? can i run that flexpipe to my 88 block? i know it will bolt up perfectly to my E6 manifold and will bolt up fine to my exhaust system... im just real iffy on the oil and coolant hoses and the vaccuum lines... seems  like there are less vaccum lines on the garrett.... this bird is my daily driver so i got to get it right.

Engine Tech / 2.3L timing...
yeah its timed right... just realized i have an intake leak but that shouldnt not it either.
14
Engine Tech / 2.3L timing...
if you look at the drivers sife of the head... there is an oil pump.. that is the type of wire connector i am talking about.
15
Engine Tech / 2.3L timing...
no exhaust blockage... it has to be in the motor.. not a vaccum leak... timing is 10BTDc. cam is on cam marks. Dizzy @ 1, TPS @ .94 volts closed. Idle screw about 1/3 of the way in.  Could a water pump do it? just noticed today that i am leaking crazily around the water pump. could a loose water pump cause a pulley wobble that drains power? i think the water pump bolts came a little loose doing the headgasket. it is only leaking around the formagasket not from the weep hole.

Or I had one other Idea... what about the knock sensor. If i got the wiring wrong between the oil pump and the knock sensor would that do it? the 1 wire plugs for both were on the same harness.

Without belts the car sounds and seems to run terrific. but as soon as i engage my transmission the power is gone... its kinda wierd.
