Toyota buying ford

Anyone here this rumor I was talking to my father today and he was telling me that both company’s are taking and trying to negotiate so sort of a deal. With ford problems financially Toyota is interested in buying them.

I think that sounds backwards. I can never see ford getting sold IMO. I have heard something like that though.

I think you're confusing Toyota with Subaru or Suzuki (which GM sold their shares of a little while ago).

Since most of the parts come from there most likely, why not.

You really must tell us where you get your information. GM does not own Toyota. Not half of Toyota, not 1/4, not even 1/8th. The few partnerships GM and Toyota had do not constitute ownership. The two companies very likely own "token" shares of each other, but neither company "owns" the other. In fact, given that Toytoa actually has money while GM is hemhoraging, Toyota could probably buy GM with pocket change right now, if they wanted to. And they don't want to. Toyota does not need GM, so why would they spend the money?

Wait a minute... didn't we go over this in another thread?

It's been done. A few years ago GM made a very feeble attempt at entering the puppiesanese market by having Toyota rebadge the Cavalier as a (you guessed it) Toyota Cavalier. It was spectacularly unsuccessful.

The Prism/Nova and Corolla were the same car, and the Vibe and Matrix are the same car, but they are not an indication of ownership. They were a joint venture between GM and Toyota (I believe the joint venture was called either "NUMMI" or "CAMI" - one was the GM/Toyota thing, the other was the GM/Suzuki thing), and it was mainly a way for Toyota to get a foothold (and experience) manufacturing vehicles in North America. Just like the Toyta Cavalier was a poor attempt by GM at getting a foothold in the puppiesanese market.

GM owned part of Suzuki, Isuzu, Saab, and Subaru, but I think aside from Saab they never had a controlling interest in any of 'em. GM may own a few shares in Toyota, but Toyota likely owns just as many shares of GM (they may have swapped shares as part of the venture). GM even has a joint venture with Honda - just open the hood of a V6 Saturn Vue and you'll find 24 valves of VTEC Honda V6 fury. Doesn't mean GM owns Toyota. Honda and Isuzu also did a joint venture - the first Honda Passport was simply an Isuzu Rodeo, and Isuzu marketed a version of the Honda Odyssey minivan. Honda and Isuzu do not own each other.

Ford was the first (and AFAIK only) NA manufacturer to obtain controlling interest in a puppiesanese manufacturer when they obtained 35% of Mazda. Ford has also done joint ventures with Nissan (Nissan Quest/Mercury Villager), Volkswagen (European Galaxy)

Innes: I would bet your father's got the much rumoured GM/Nissan/Renault merger confused. There has lately been talk (and meetings) on the possibility of GM and Renault/Nissan merging, though it's not cast in stone as nobody in the industry can figure out exactly what Renault/Nissan would gain from the deal. GM would gain Carlos Ghosn, but Nissan would only gain a bunch of out-dated, mediocre vehicle platforms and engines.
