engines dying

Ok Im lost. I got this weird clatter that sounds like my motors out of oil. I know its not out its actually a little overfull not by much but a little. The noise sounds like its in the lower half of the engine. So Im guessing I spun a bearing. At the same time its not really a knock its more of a clatter. I did notice that my oil pressure will only go up if I keep the RPM higher. If I'm at idle or doing below 20 MPH when the engines warmed up the oil pressure bottoms out and is pretty much non existent. The motors always had a problem where if it gets low on oil the pressure dropped. But now its doing it all the time. It's a 3.8l  so the oil pumps built into the timing chain cover. Ive rebuilt that before but noticed there was some scarring of the plate that bolts to the bottom so that got me to wonder if it could be the oil pump out again.
The problem started last week when I let the room mate use the car and it was pretty low on oil when it came back not low to where it was empty but low to where it needed about a quart and a half. The only thing I had to put in it was the syntec oil I had for the oil change on the 302 instead of going and buying some I went ahead and used that.
Did I make a boo boo? I have other timing covers to try on it to see if that fixes it but if not I still need ideas on exactly what it could be. If anyone else has had this problem that is. I know a few people on the board stand by this motor. personally this is one of the reasons I'll be glad to get rid of the thing. thanks for any help guys.
