and for the first time ever, im on a road trip without tools or any spare fluids...
go figure.

I find a jug in the ditch, start heading down the hill
no cell service,, so my USAA roadside service is useless

passer bys reported a "Car fire"
cop shows up
two fire trucks show up,, im like ok, this is handy ,,, fire trucks have water.

I put my upper radiator hose back on that just simply poped off,  i suppise i didnt snug it down as well as i should have.

drove from gap mills wv  to Queenstown Md and back with just water and whatever antifreeze was in the block..

oh well, that will teach me

DOH. I had something like that happen. A blow-out in a car I just bought. I had a spare, but no tools and no jack. Then it started raining. Pouring... Then a cop showed up, and made fun of me "I usually only have to help women change tires!". Yeah, yeah, get me outta here...

Long trips in old cars equals fun, especially if you don't have spare parts ;).

Jay that is why i like SPRING CLAMPS. I very rarely use WORM clampe as the Spring clamps are self adjusting. Glad you and the car are OK. IT HAPPENS!!

YES and they are the best as they tighten up automatically when they need to as the hose ages. That is why the OE uses them. Here is a tip from YOURS TRULY. Always use 2 clamps when feasible. I can fit 2 clamps on most hose connections. Weather spring or worm 2 clamps always is something you should try and do. I order the thin ones like on the VW engines and installing 2 is a SNAP.

Here is an example i just finished camming this GTO and note the bypass hose connection. This is an example of double clamping which is absolutely necessary on fuel and other hose connections including radiator hoses ETC. Note i normally never use WORM clamps as they do not work as well as Spring clamps.

Here is a custom fuel filter mod i do on Mustangs. Note the 2 clamps on either side of the flexible hose. Never use a single clamp on fuel connections. Sometimes i use 3 if i can fit them. But 2 is the bare MIN!! If you position the worm clamps correctly you can squeeze in two of them with no issues. But as i said sometimes you need thin ones. I am working with a company to convince them to make slim hose clamps for this reason. It is not UN COMMON to see a radiator hose separate. Also this is one of my best secrets. Never install a hose on anything before cleaning both ends with brake clean and spraying the connections before assembly with HAIR SPRAY. Now your wife or girlfriend may get mad when they find there hair spray missing. But your hoses will be happily connected FIRMLY. I never released the HAIR SPRAY SECRET so now is an opportune time to do so!! JR is going to pound me for telling about the HAIR SPRAY. And note i made a BUBBLE in the hard line. Never install a flex line without a bubble unless it is like a return line. Even then i make a bubble in the line. Cheers!!!

Here is a bubble i made in a fuel line.

i like spring clamps as well, the flat metal ones, not the two wire ones.

some say they are designed to slide on if you push really hard, ive dont that with spring clamps but not the wire type spring clamps

as for the worm clamp that failed, i remember putting the hose on about a year ago when i did my heater core modification.
I remembered a story a fomoco tech told me, he said if you tighten the clamp down and you run your finger along the hose and you *dont* feel the edge of the clamp any longer, then its tight.  He explained that if you over tighten a worm clamp, the sharp edge will be the place the hose fails first as it cuts into the rubber.  Basically telling me i was constanly over doing my hose clamps.  Years and years later i decided to give this a try and for a year it lasted.
But,,,,,,,,, i went back to my old tricks real quick like in this situation.  from now on those s are going on friggin tight.

Well once again a simple thing like a hose clamp is a very technical part. Actually a worm clamp that does not have an inside protector band is not suited for automotive hose use. With that most likely 90% of mechanics and saturday afternoon novice mechanics do not even give them a thought. BUT they are involved and must be installed properly. No one gives a hose clamp a second thought when installing one. Jay basically your ford expert does not know about hose clamps and is evident with your break down. So here is 2 kinds of modern AUTOMOTIVE CLAMPS. The bigger one as you can see has a band that covers the gear serrations and is the only clamps i use. The band cover prevents the gear cerrations from eating in to the HOSE. And the only clamp suited for SILICONE or Natural rubber hose in automotive use.The smaller one is a modern clamp with a MAR-CELL built in to the clamp to eliminate the issue you had JAY. And by the way all worm clamps and clamps must be installed correctly. Centered on the BARB  and TORQUED TO SPECKS. Now how many of you guys TORQUE A HOSE CLAMP??? I DO EACH AND EVERY ONE. Thanks
