i believe it.. 4.6's are gutless at the bottom end in stock form. it's mostly in their stock tune for emmissions.. a good tune and a cai will do a lot for idle-2k

3- 87 TC's / 1 really mean 83 Capri RS / 94 Sonoma SAS Project on 37x12.50 TSL Radials / 88 S10 that's LITERALLY cut to pieces / 84 F150 SAS, 351M, 39.5 TSL's / 85 Toyota regular cab, 22R 5spd, 3/4" drop, my little junkyard save/daily driver

I dunno. I don't really want to start a g match here, I just find a hard time believing that a 4000 lb. station wagon with a 150 hp. 302 is better on the jump than an '01 GT or even an earlier 4.6 T-bird or Cougar. I'm not saying they are extremely fast, or even remotely fast, but the 94 bird and 94 Cat I had were definitely quicker than the '91 Crown Vic I had before them. Granted they aren't the best on bottom end, but hell, neither is the stock 5.0.

My daughter's mountain bike will out accelerate my Town Car by a long shot , I'm 100% sure a 4.6  GT would make me look like an idiot

i don't like sn95's or their motors.. i had a customer who would come in like clockwork, once a month, with his 99 GT.. i hated and still hate that car.. mt soul died a little each time i worked on the car. the first thing he wanted was SLP loudmouth lers, which make the 4.6 sound like a trans am.. loud, raspy as hell and overly obnoxious.. i finally turned the guy away when he asked if i'd do a lightening svt motor swap
Huh? So you didn't like the car (for no apparent reason?). OK and the guy wanted  one of the loudest most obnoxious catback you can put on a car you  them all. Interesting. I don't like it either. 2 of my friends have them, one a blown 04 GT and another a bullit. I can barely hear my car when i follow either of those guys. I have a chambered borla catback and a catted X. Not loud cruising. The tires on my jeep are louder then my cruising "note". No drone on the highway and it sounds fantastic. Point is, you have options with the V8 cars. You really don't with the sixers. They sound awful, particularly when you throw an exhaust on them. No different than a ranger. They just don't wring right.

i don't like loud and obnoxious, i like a decent tone and loud when you put it to the floor. you're right, SC's don't have any rumble, but they certainly don't sound like a farm tractor, that's a lousy comparison.. most people are surprised at what's in my capri and blue tc because they're not as loud as you'd expect them to be. both cars have flowmaster 60 series AND dynomax race bullets on them.. the race bullets are mounted up by the trans crossmeber with a 3bolt header  on the back, so i can disconnect the full length exhaust at the track.. i'm extremely satisfied with how they sound, not much louder than a 5.0 stang with flowmasters.. 9 times out of 10, you hear the turbo over the exhaust from inside the car.. that's how my SC was with the 10% pulley and silencer holes blocked off
I dunno, you keep mentioning loudness. We're on 2 different pages if thats the case cause loudness isn't the issue. Its the gross sound the 6 cyl cars make be it your SC, a ranger, a grand prix, a jeep etc....I don't know what it is with the domestic cars but they just sound bad or if you are lucky, "ok" like the one posted. That car gets an astounding epic "meh" from me the second i hit play. Just my opinion. Glad you're satisfied with the sound you car makes. Post up a vid!

it also has a lot to do with how well both have been maintained.. i've seen some pretty hurt 4.6's get spanked by great running 4 banger/t5 stangs

The 4 valve cars aren't. Hell the GT does fine as well. If you are comparing it to the 5.0 then sure, they have a different torque curve (it's been years since i've driven an old 5.0 car that was near stock) but they are completely different animals.

I would agree with that. But, stock for stock, in around the same condition, I just don't see it happening.

The only 4.6 I ever really ran side by side with was a 94 cougar. Freind's little sisters car. Inherited it with around 32k. Who ever took off first won everytime. I am really not too impressed with most of the 4.6's. Top end, the 86 pulled on it ever so slightly.
LOL, you're not impressed with MOST 4.6s or the shiznitbox 94 you ran?

My freinds 2001 gt does not even pass my 88 wagon till I'm doing 30-35mph. There is just no bottom end to them. Once they get going they really scoot though.
Somebody is doing something wrong or something is wrong with the GT. Even if that WAS the case, It's certainly over after that. We do have one local GT that had some sort of issue where it's driving like a slug. Not sure if the kid worked that out or not but I'd bet it would still take your 88. (not banging on you or your car, I've had them. There is a reason I moved on).

I still think an h.o. swapped cat or bird with a stick would take on a 99-04 mustang gt.
Stock 5.0 HO vs. stock, not a chance.

What's the point anyway. We're talking sixers right? Yank the SC off the supercoupe if you want to talk about gutless. Actually, leave it on.
