Rebuilding steering racks.

Has anyone done this?  Any tips or thoughts before tearing into my rack before i put it towards my car?

i never did it, but i remember learning in school that it was easier obviously to just replace it... and something about not being able to get some of the internal parts for them anymore.  the farthest i've gone was replacing the inner and outer tierods and boots, but that was easy to figure out. you may just want to consider a new one

purchase the following

set of various size 0-ring kit
set of various size brass washer kit
set of various size plastic washer kit

purchase a couple of banjo fittings 90 deg

there are no brass bushings internal where the pinion gear moves left to right, it just rubs on the housing.  when i saw this, i figured my time would be wasted trying to repair the problem.

whene i first looked into why i had up / down play in my rack, i figured it must be my imagination.  i released the outter tie rod on both sides and sure enough, the entire interna was moving up and down / side to side wore slam out.

I "THINK" that the reman outfits machine the rack housing and install a bushing in place to take up some wear...however, i see conflict in the shop manual with my comments.

its not worth it really.

as time marches on, someones gotta figure out how to keep the racks alive,, maybe its you who can show us how.
