cougar eliminator

i'm new here and have recently switched from driving chevys to fords due to the recent change to government motors. i was thinking of building a newer cougar eliminator by using an 83-88 cougar and droping in a 3v 4.6l with an edelbrock supercharger. my trade is body work but i have a good background in mechanical as i have been restoring cars for awhile. (including a 70 cougar eliminator) i was wondering if it is possible to put a 96-04 mustang k-member in a cougar. i know it can be put in a fox body mustang with the help of some spacers. if anyone could help me out and maybe tell me what modifications are needed it would be much appreciated. thanks.

well since the 80-88 birds and cougars are also fox body cars I would guess that you could make the K-member work but as far as I know nobody here has done the swap as of yet although it has been talked about. use the search function and see what you can stir up.  oh and Welcome!!

???

Regarding K-members - you might look at Max Motorsports to get some answers (Store > Mustang Front Suspension > MM K-Members).

Why are you thinking about swapping K's?

yeh i would go with a 5.0l rather than the 4.6l just for reason its built for it. less fab. but if you want custom and your wallets thick, go for it.

because with a k-member from a newer mustang that came with a 4.6l the new 3v 4.6l will bolt right in.

i can do all my own fab work and i don't want a 5.0l because that's been done. i'm all about different.

The Fox Mustang x-members fit with some shimming and maybe elongating the rearward mounting points... Guessing you'd have to do some of the same with the later member...

Anything is possible but there is a 3v in the works as we speak so this might "be done" too.

I say do it. Whats the worse thats going to happen? Money is only worth anything if you spend it otherwise its just another number.

okay, wasn't sure if the K swap was motor or suspension related.  sounds like a fun project.

That's originally what I wanted to do to. Throw in that 3V 4.6....It would be a pretty cool swap.

But now I've decided to go carb'ed 347 stroker. :)

I am doing this swap right now.  You need to get a 96-04 k member from a 4.6L mustang and it bolts in pretty easily, with a simple mod mentioned before.  You also need to convert your car to hydroboost brakes since the vac brake booster interferes with the valve cover on a mod motor.  The 96-98 works best, but the 99-04 can work if you shorten the MC arm to the brake pedal.

Probably the biggest issue I see is that 4.6L 3v headers point into the firewall and won’t work.  You need to get 4v headers with 3v-4v header adapters from Logan, or fab your own.  The adapters make the engine very wide.

Here’s my thread.  3V conversion is later in the thread and is at the point of installing the new K member and brake conversion.

Also read this thread on someone else who did the conversion.  Be sure to read all five parts.

Also got to modularfords.com and find the forum modular conversions.

i know this is an old thread but since i last posted alot of things have changed. i traded my 05 trailblazer for an 02 audi tt quattro and an 86 z28 camaro. i also am getting a new job as a merchant marine for the U.S. Government. i am in the process of selling the camaro so that i can buy a cougar. my friend also got a new car to replace his xr7 that he still has and i think i could buy for about $500, needs brake lines. any more input is greatly appreciated.
