I did get a nasty surprise under the paint on the passenger door. I knew that the paint looked different on that side of the car. It looked like a re-spray, so I was expecting some kind of a repair.

It looks to me like the rear quarter was replaced with a factory panel and the passenger door has had a repair down the center for nearly the entire thing. The work was done decently, so I'm not disappointed too much. It will mean more time to get the door right, since I sanded out enough of the old work to be sure of how it was done. I also ground out by the sail panel where the quarter was joined.

Not the worst news, but a little extra time for sure. I was thinking I might get to spraying color this weekend before I found that. Now that won't happen for sure.

I'm thinking next week some time at this point. I want to set up an appointment for the windshield before paint.

Bummer! So sorry your car has some repair. It looks like they replaced the whole quarter panel and merged it at the lower sail panel? And it was a red quarter panel?

The quarter panel repair does look decent though. I guess you could find another door if you had too.

But if you are not going for a show queen, go with what you have! I'm sure when you are done, it will look beautiful - just more work.

No worries. I expected something to be there. I'm happy enough with what I found.

The red fender is one that I bought, that's for the drivers side. The back passengers quarter has what I think is factory black primer underneath. It is different from the rest of the car in how it was painted.

The paint on that side was faded and pitting, not so anywhere else on the car. It had to have been a collision repair. I'm guessing it happened early in the car's life and was possibly repaired at a dealership. At least they used the right parts and techniques. The paint was just not as good as the rest.

The door will be fine. It isn't rusty and a little filler won't bother me at all. It looks like it was kind of creased in. Pretty easy to fill and get straight. I couldn't tell it was there when I bought it, so I should be able to do as good given some time.

Working and sanding. Sanding and working.

Not much to show you on progress, but it's there.

At this stage,

The roof is done, trunk lid done, rear quarters done.

Hood at 90%, drivers door 80%. Ft and rear bumpers and header panel nearly ready.

Pax door just begun, ft. fenders barely begun. Still hoping to be doing some spraying this weekend.

Yeah, plenty of all-alone time when paint prep starts!

New outer door handles showed up in the mail, as well as a used Mustang GT shifter to take a look at once I get done with paint. I've started to think that moving the OD switch off the shifter is no big deal at all.

Had a dummy shaft gear fail on the TR7 on the way to work. Cleaned off a couple of teeth. With Winter getting close I'll just park it until Spring. I'll have to drop the front crossmember to get to the oil pump to change it out, along with replacing the aux shaft and gear that failed. :shoothead

Thanks. It was the engine from the Tbird, so it has some miles on it. I should have been checking the gear wear as a matter of regular maintenance. It was time to tear things apart and really look it over anyway. I've just driven it for 3 years now with an oil change every now and again.

The paint code was for Silver Poly #14.

I spent all day sanding yesterday. Mostly blocking and filling little stuff while working on the drivers door dent and the pax sail panel. I'm hoping to have those done this morning. I think I've found and filled all the little door dings and such.

I'll have to decide how to tackle masking the door jambs, and how I'll handle the paint process. The jambs aren't bad so I may spray the outside of the car only. I may do the roof, hood, and trunk lid separately from the body, nose, and front fenders. That'll keep the trash out of the clear better, and be easier to manage the air hose, but I risk a color mis-match shooting at different times. I doubt it will be an issue.

If I do that I can shoot the parts of the jambs that would get paint and lower backs of the doors while I do the roof, then mask it off and shut the doors for the outer body spray.

We'll see.....

We always paint parts off the car when possible. Especially the doors hood trunk lids bumper covers ETC. It is easier and you can see you work better and control the gun and overlap passes.

Also remember to mix your paint all at once and shoot as much of the parts as possible all at once. We have a booth so we can do it at our leisure. But lacking a booth you have environmental differences to deal with. Good luck.

One other thing!!!

SILVER without a doubt is one of the hardest colors to paint. If you do not have experience shooting it practice on an old hood or door before shooting the car. Once again SILVER is a BITCH plain and simple. If you need tips on painting JR is the master. Just PM him if you need info. He even splashes water . We are changing over to WATER and the stuff is GREAT. Good Luck

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.

The Firebird looks nice. That finished picture isn't a good example pic, though. The fender looks a different shade there. I'm sure it's just an illusion, but it almost illustrates why you should paint the car as a single assembled unit.

Thanks Tom. I have some experience, and silver is a bugger to be sure. Base/ clear silver is at least better than single-stage. That is REAL hard to get even! That's why I wish I could paint it all at once. It ends up being an issue of my available space.

I'm just kind of thinking out loud on this. I got up too early. LOL

Looking good! As long as you mix all the paint at once it doesn't affect when you spray it, as long as it is properly mixed. Silver is only hard when it is made up of a bunch of aluminum flake. The simpler the paint formula, the easier it is to spray and match. The only colors I have had real issue with are GM Blacks, Chrysler red/maroon and my Cougar. GM has at least 15 different formulas for a solid black, most require a drop or two of either yellow, blue or red, and they all look different when comparing paint chips or painted panels. The easiest way to make sure you don't have problems with dirt in the base or clear is make sure you wet the floor down and have one open airway(doorway) with a fan pulling air out of that opening, but allowing airflow only through the fan, not above, below or around. It helps alot when painting outside of a booth.
